Description

Reformed church (St. Calixtus). Large, late-gothic church with pseudo-basilical nave of six bays and single-aisle choir of two straight sections with three-sided closure. Heavy western tower with wooden spire from the 19th century second half.

Tower 14th century second half, nave 15th century, choir and northern side chapel 15th century second half. The church, entirely covered by cross-ribbed vaults, has in the nave round columns of Baumberger sandstone, carved bosses and corbels and window traceries which have almost entirely retained their original design.

Heavy war damage in 1945; restoration 1946-53, tower 1953-54. The tower spire was modified during restoration.

Inventory: fragments of the late-gothic choir stalls, Romanesque baptismal font of Bentheim stone, oak pulpit (19th century first half), wall paintings depicting three apostles on the north wall of the choir (15th century second half). Two brass crowns (18th century) and various tombstones (16th century and later). Curious painting that keeps the memory alive of the birth of the Groningen quadruplets (1648). Against the north side chapel of the choir a sepulchral monument with cast-iron obelisk (1835). Bell frame with bell by Gebr. Edelbrock, 1837, diam. 110.8 cm. Sundial high on the buttress, to the right beside the south entrance of the church. The sundial was relocated in 1979.
