Inleiding

- als bijzondere uitdrukking van een sociaal-economische en technische ontwikkeling;

- als essentieel onderdeel van een groter geheel dat cultuurhistorisch van nationaal belang is;

- vanwege de situering, verbonden met de geschiedenis van de stad;

- vanwege de historisch-ruimtelijke relatie met het water;

- vanwege de -in hoofdvorm in grote mate aanwezige- architectonische gaafheid;

- in relatie tot de structurele en visuele gaafheid van de stedelijke en landschappelijke omgeving;

- vanwege de typologische en functionele zeldzaamheid.

Introduction

The "old sea lock" at Stavoren -LOCK GATE- is situated on the north side of the town and on the south-east side of the harbour. The sea lock already existed in the 16th century: in 1576 it was managed by the Sea Dike Administrations of Wymbritseradiel, Hemelumer Oldeferd and the town of Stavoren. The lock was repaired in 1894, extended by 2.50 m. and fitted with iron doors, which is commemorated on the eastern revetment of the lock by a facade stone. This was prompted among other things by the construction, at the end of the 19th century, of the railway line and the building of the station to the north of the locks, and the construction of the railway harbour for the ferry service to Enkhuizen. Until 1965 the lock was used for locking through cargo and fishing vessels among others. Nowadays it is mainly used for recreational navigation and in case of emergency. In 1977 the locks were restored: the lock walls, revetments and lock gates were repaired and the winding and operating mechanism was renewed; the brickwork of the lock walls and lock heads was cleaned, re-pointed and in part re-laid. The natural stones were cleaned and re-used, the lock floor was renewed. The revetments on both sides of the lock -from 1889 and 1933- were replaced by azobé revetment; the remaining components, such as small stairs and landings, were largely restored with both existing and new stones. On this occasion the bridge over the lock was replaced by a new steel drawbridge. This restoration is also commemorated by a rectangular, natural stone facade stone.

The drawbridge does not qualify for protection at national level due to insufficient age. To the north-east of the lock gate lies the (renewed) old harbour with several components placed in 1880-1884 (namely two harbour lights, a water gauge house, a light standard and two bollards). These are protected as a complex and separately described.

Description

The lock gate consists of a lock chamber with concrete floor, two iron lock gates and azobé revetments with natural stone, rusticated lock heads. The lock is 6.5 m. wide and approximately 52 m. long. In front of and behind the gates, sill beam grooves have been provided. The stepped small stairs and landings laid out around are largely new.

Valuation

The lock gate, the "old sea lock", at the harbour at Stavoren, in design dating from the 16th century but extended and renewed in 1894, is of general cultural-historical importance:

- as a particular expression of a socio-economic and technical development;

- as an essential component of a larger whole which is of cultural-historical importance of national significance;

- on account of its location, linked with the history of the town;

- on account of the historical-spatial relationship with water;

- on account of the architectural integrity present in large part in its main form;

- in relation to the structural and visual integrity of the urban and landscape setting;

- on account of typological and functional rarity.
