Inleiding
Het PEILSCHAALHUIS bevindt zich aan de zuidwest-zijde van de haven van Stavoren, ten zuiden van de dammen en is naar het zuidoosten georiënteerd. Het is in 1880 gebouwd in een Ambachtelijk-traditionele stijl die is verlevendigd door decoratief metselwerk. Het peilschaalhuis is nu in gebruik als kantoor van de havenmeester: het meet-mechanisme (ondergronds) is nog aanwezig en functioneert nog steeds.
Omschrijving
Het peilschaalhuis heeft een rechthoekige plattegrond, is uit bruine baksteen opgetrokken en wordt gedekt door een zinken zadeldak met schoorsteen. Rondom loopt een natuurstenen plint. Tegen de zuidwestgevel staat een (iets jongere) aanbouw onder platdak, met aan de voorzijde een houten deur en aan de zuid-westzijde een gebogen venster met gemetselde, gebogen strek. In de geveltop met geprofileerde windveer is een (min of meer) zeskantige steen aangebracht met het opschrift: "RIJKS PEILSCHAAL 1880". Hieronder bevindt zich de voordeur onder een gebogen strek van rode en gele bakstenen. Voor de natuurstenen plint ligt een tweetreeds bakstenen trap.
De noord-oostelijke zijgevel en de achtergevel hebben vierruits-vensters met gemetselde, gebogen strek. In de top van de achtergevel zit een rond venster.
INTERIEUR. Onder de vloer bevindt zich de oorspronkelijke meetapparatuur. Het geheel bevindt zich in een 5 meter diepe put, waarin een ladder is geplaatst en een ruimte waar het water in loopt. De peilschaal ernaast geeft de hoogte van het water aan.
Waardering
Het peilschaalhuis uit 1880 aan de haven van Stavoren is van algemeen cultuurhistorisch belang:
- als bijzondere uitdrukking van een technische en typologische ontwikkeling;
- als essentieel onderdeel van een groter geheel dat cultuurhistorisch van nationaal belang is;
- vanwege de historisch-ruimtelijke relatie met het water;

Introduction
The WATER-GAUGE HOUSE is located on the south-west side of the harbour of Stavoren, south of the dams and is oriented towards the south-east. It was built in 1880 in a Craft-traditional style enlivened by decorative brickwork. The water-gauge house is now in use as an office of the harbour master: the measuring mechanism (underground) is still present and continues to function.
Description
The water-gauge house has a rectangular floor plan, is built of brown brickwork and is covered by a zinc gabled roof with chimney. Around it runs a natural stone plinth. Against the south-west gable stands a (somewhat later) extension under flat roof, with on the front a wooden door and on the south-west side a curved window with mortared, curved brickwork. In the gable top with profiled wind vane a (more or less) hexagonal stone is fitted with the inscription: "RIJKS PEILSCHAAL 1880". Below this is the front door under a curved brickwork of red and yellow bricks. In front of the natural stone plinth lies a two-step brick staircase.
The north-east side gable and the rear gable have four-pane windows with mortared, curved brickwork. In the top of the rear gable sits a round window.
INTERIOR. Under the floor is the original measuring apparatus. The whole is situated in a 5 metre deep pit, in which a ladder is placed and a space where water flows in. The water-gauge beside it indicates the height of the water.
