Inleiding
OPENLUCHTZWEMBAD "De Houtvaart", gebouwd in 1927 naar Zakelijk-Expressionistisch ontwerp van de Dienst Openbare Werken Haarlem. De voorzijde van het zwembad ligt in de as van het De Ruyterplein en vormt daarvan de stedenbouwkundige afsluiting. De oorspronkelijke gescheiden opzet voor mannen en vrouwen is verdwenen.
Omschrijving
Op rechthoekig grondplan gebouwd openluchtzwembad waarvan het deels onder het maaiveld gelegen bassin aan drie zijden is omgeven door bebouwing en waarvan de open oostzijde vanaf kadehoogte via twee trappen toegang geeft tot een lagere ligweide. De bebouwing bestaat uit reeksen kleedhokjes ter hoogte van één bouwlaag onder doorlopend plat dak. Aan de zuidzijde bevindt zich een hoger blok met daarin onder meer de ingangspartij.
Vanaf de openbare weg manifesteert deze ingangspartij zich als een symmetrisch blok in gevarieerde kubische opbouw. De ingangspartij bestaat uit een onderbouw in gele baksteen die een rechthoekige betonnen bak draagt. Deze bak is afgewerkt met een ruwe donkerrode pleister. De onderbouw heeft een evenwijdig aan de voorzijde lopend bordes dat aan beide kopse zijden via negen treden wordt bereikt. Achter dit bordes bevindt zich een kleine centrale muuropening met aan weerszijden daarvan grote muuropeningen die de oorspronkelijke en gescheiden ingangen voor mannen en vrouwen vormen. Het muurwerk links (west) van de ingangspartij is net als dat aan de west- en noordzijde grotendeels gesloten. Het heeft een hoogte van circa drie meter en is uitgevoerd in gele baksteen. Het muurwerk rechts (oost) van de ingangspartij is lager, gevarieerder van opbouw en voorzien van openingen met trappen die afdalen naar de ligweide.
Waardering
Uit 1927 daterend openluchtzwembad De Houtvaart van algemeen belang vanuit architectuurhistorisch en cultuurhistorisch oogpunt vanwege de karakteristieke, door kubische vormen en symmetrie bepaalde vormgeving en vanwege de historische functie van openbare sport- en recreatievoorziening in de open lucht. Het object is voorts van stedenbouwkundig belang als noordelijke afsluiting van het De Ruyterplein.

At the south side there is a higher block containing, among other things, the entrance section.
From the public road, this entrance section manifests itself as a symmetrical block in varied cubic composition. The entrance section consists of a substructure in yellow brick which carries a rectangular concrete box. This box is finished with rough dark red render. The substructure has a landing running parallel to the front which is reached from both end sides via nine steps.
