Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
In 1903 built according to a design by architect S. Roog former BATHHOUSE. This second public bathhouse of Haarlem served as a bathhouse for the population of the Leidsebuurt, a working-class neighbourhood which developed from 1876 on the western edge of Haarlem. The bathhouse is located in the eastern part of the Leidsebuurt, on the western edge of Leidseplein. Until 1979 the bathhouse served as such. But due to renovation and urban renewal of this neighbourhood in the 1970s, the bathhouse no longer met a need. In the years after 1979 the bathhouse was remodelled in terms of its interior and has since had a socio-cultural function in the neighbourhood.
The building shows influences of transition architecture in its exterior.
Description
Former bathhouse consisting of different building volumes on a symmetrical, composite ground plan. On the west side there is a one storey high largely rectangular volume with two bevelled sides. In this part of the building, which is covered by a hipped roof, were formerly the shower and bath cubicles. To the east of this low building part is a virtually square building volume, containing the entrance and the former caretaker's residence, of two storeys high under, partly low-running, gabled roof. In the middle of this gabled roof is a square extension under tent roof. On the top of this tent roof stands an iron weathervane.
The east side of the virtually square two-storey building volume is closed off by two square tower-like volumes under tent roof. The roofs are largely covered with red Dutch tiles. The building is built in pink brick on a high plinth of grey brick. The facades are decorated with details in yellow brick. The virtually square, two-storey building volume has a number of cornice strips covered with yellow tiles. Along part of the roof edges is a broad ornamental band consisting of yellow brick and cemented brick. The somewhat overhanging roof edges are supported by green-painted wooden consoles. Above most of the windows is in the spandrels a mosaic of yellow and blue tiles.
The entrance of the former bathhouse is located in the east facade of the two-storey building volume. The entrance, consisting among other things of two wooden doors with fanlights, is topped by a partly tiled and partly rendered spandrel, with inscribed in the rendering: "2E VOLKSBADHUIS".
The windows in the former bathhouse are all of wood. Some of the windows are fixed, some are casement. The largely rendered square extension on the two-storey building volume, has on two sides a row of three fixed wooden windows.
The interior of the building has been largely renewed. In the low building part, where formerly the bath and shower cubicles stood, a large open space has now been created.
Valuation
Dating from 1903, well-preserved in its exterior neighbourhood facility of general importance by virtue of the socio-historical, typological and architectural-historical value through the former bathhouse function of the building within a working-class neighbourhood. Architecturally the building is furthermore of importance within the oeuvre of architect S. Roog.
