Inleiding

Introduction

Double VILLA in eclectic style built against a slope of the ramparts, designed by L. Tollenaar in 1869. The building belongs to the construction period which mainly between 1864 and 1870 resulted in the construction of eleven villas on the ramparts, which shortly after 1821 according to a design by J.D. Zocher jr. had been transformed into an uneven walking park in English landscape style. The double villa is still in use as such.

Description

Symmetrically arranged double villa on a cross-shaped ground plan and consisting of two storeys under a composite hipped roof, covered with black pantiles. The cross-shaped main volume actually consists of two T-shaped volumes, the western and eastern half of the villa, which are placed against each other at the top of the T. The building has four window bays frontage facing the road; the central risalit contains two window bays. Both side elevations each have one window bay. The rear elevation is identical to the front elevation. On either side of the central risalit there is a balcony mounted on wooden columns spanning the entire inner corner of the main volume. The building is constructed of white-rendered brick on a slightly projecting grey-rendered plinth. The central risalit is articulated vertically with reveals in which the window bays are located. The wall surface of the risalit between the window bays is likewise provided with a reveal. Upon this sits a console in a Neo-Gothic style. Other Neo-Gothic elements are formed by the eyebrows above the windows. More Neo-Classical in character are the pilaster-like corner decorations and the continuous frieze with the cornice.

The windows are predominantly light-arched, all executed in wood and still occasionally provided with T-shaped sashes. After 1900, leaded glass was placed in the fanlights of the ground floor.

Valuation

The villa, which is largely well-preserved in its main form and detailing, is of general importance from a cultural-historical and architectural-historical perspective, as well as owing to its ensemble value as part of the nineteenth-century villa development in relation to the landscaped design of the ramparts.
