Inleiding

Description
Introduction
VILLA built against the slope of the ramparts in Eclectic style to a design by J.H. van Ek from 1869. The building belongs to the building wave that resulted mainly between 1864 and 1870 in the realization of eleven villas on the ramparts, which shortly after 1821 were transformed into a varied walking park in English landscape style to a design by J.D. Zocher jr. The villa was extended after 1900 on the east side with a single-storey extension in the form and size of a conservatory. The building currently has an office function.
Description
The largely symmetrically planned villa has a rectangular ground plan and consists of a basement, piano nobile, first floor and attic storey. The rectangular building stands with its long side facade (south) parallel to the access road, the front facade (west) and rear facade (east) stand perpendicular to the access road. The front and rear facades are three window axes in width, both side facades five window axes in width. Above the continuous frieze with cornice is a hipped roof covered with black Dutch tiles with the ridge line running parallel to the access road. The gutter line rests on consoles which are placed individually, in pairs and in rows. The front facade (west) has a narrow central projection which continues in the frieze and cornice and is accentuated by a roof dormer. In the projection is the entrance placed in a portico, above which is a balcony accessed via double opening doors from the first floor. On either side of the projection on the piano nobile and first floor is a double window. Both side facades are identical. Of the five window axes, the second and fourth have spandrels. The rear facade has, like the front facade, a central projection but differs from the front facade by the use of non-coupled windows on the first floor. To the right (north) of the central projection is the extension mentioned in the introduction with a flat roof accessible from the first floor.
The villa is built in white-rendered brick on a slightly projecting dark plinth. The decoration contains neoclassical elements, such as the continuous cornice bands connecting the window sills, and the cornices resting on consoles, and neo-Gothic elements such as the eyebrow mouldings above the windows and the treatment of the top of the central projection in the front facade. The parapets are decorated with foliate motifs.
The windows are predominantly light-arched, T-shaped and executed in wood. The panelled door in the front facade dates from the time of construction.
Valuation
The villa from 1869 in Eclectic style, largely well preserved in its main form and detailing, is of general significance due to its cultural and architectural-historical value, and also due to its ensemble value as a characterizing component of the villa development which took place between 1864 and 1870 in relation to the landscape design of the ramparts.
