Inleiding

Description
Introduction
VILLA built against a slope and at some distance from the roadway in neoclassical style according to a design by J. van Ek from 1865. The building belongs to the building movement that mainly between 1864 and 1870 resulted in the construction of eleven villas on the fortifications, which shortly after 1821 according to a design by J.D. Zocher jr. had been transformed into an undulating public park in English landscape style.
Description
The symmetrically arranged villa has a rectangular ground plan with a central risalit on the long sides. The long sides lie respectively on the southeast and the northwest.
The central risalit on the northwest side is less deep than that on the southeast side. The building consists of basement, bel étage, first floor and low attic storey and stands at an angle to the roadway.
Because the building is constructed against a slope, the basement is only visible on the southeast side, where it manifests itself as a plinth. Bel étage and first floor are of equal height.
The long sides each have five window bays, of which three are in the risalits. The building has a gently sloping hipped roof with black Dutch tiles. The ridgeline runs parallel to the long sides.
The villa is built of plastered brick on a grey plastered plinth. The plasterwork of the plinth has on the corners and in the central risalit the motif of natural stone blocks. The whole stands on a slightly projecting base line. The masonry above the plinth has smooth plasterwork within a horizontal and vertical articulation. This articulation consists between plinth and higher masonry of a continuous cordon moulding, while the bel étage and first floor are each concluded by a continuous frieze and cornice. The first floor has as additional articulation a cordon moulding that connects the window sills with one another. The vertical articulation of the facades above the plinth consists of coupled lisenes on and near the corners of the main body and the risalits.
Except in the risalits, the window bays are provided with moulded frames; on the first floor moreover with a frieze and cornice. The low masonry between cordon moulding and window sill is on the bel étage smooth and slightly projecting and on the first floor decorated and kept flush with the plane. The windows are all of wood and provided with T-shaped frames.
Valuation
The villa from 1865 in Eclectic style, largely well preserved in main form and detailing, is of general interest due to cultural and architectural-historical value; furthermore, the villa is of general interest due to ensemble value as a prominent component of villa development in relation to the landscaped layout of the fortifications.
