Inleiding

Introduction

MAIN BUILDING of the so-called 'Type Française 1874-1875', built in 1883-1884 in a mixed style of Neo-Renaissance and Neo-Baroque. In contrast to the previously customary carré-shaped barracks type, this linear type was developed directly after the Franco-German War with a view to greater access of light and air into the men's dormitory halls. The main building is set far back from the Schoterweg. In accordance with the military views of the time, the main building thus dominates the entire exercise ground in front of it.

Description

Main building on a symmetrical-linear ground plan and in symmetrical arrangement, with central and corner risalits. The building has a lively massing effect through the building volumes which are offset in relation to each other in width and height, of which the greatest height and depth is achieved by the tower-shaped central section with main entrance. All volumes are closed by flattened hipped roofs with slate in Maas bond. The masonry is executed in red brick, which in plinths, sills, string courses, rusticated work and relieving arches is alternated with natural stone. On the rear (E) these elements are plastered. The centrally risalited section on front and rear consists of four storeys under high flattened hipped roof with iron ornamental railings. The richly decorated central section has rusticated corners which on the ground floor and second storey are entirely executed in hard stone. The arched masonry around the main entrance is also rusticated. Above the main entrance is inscribed in a natural stone plaque the name 'Ripperdakazerne'. The width of the facade surface between the rusticated corners amounts to two window bays. The masonry of the central section is closed by an encircling cornice above which is a central clockface. On the corners of the low parapet wall on either side of the clockface stand feathered decorative corner pieces from suits of armour.

The central section forms part of the central main volume which on either side of the central section has a width of four window bays and a height of three storeys with roof storey. The outer corners are projecting and rusticated on the first two storeys. On the ground floor the rusticated corners also project downwards at the bottom. The masonry is closed by an arcaded frieze with string course, above which is a (block) dentil band that carries the guttering. In the roof slopes two rows of four roof lights (oeil de boeuf) are placed on the front (W). On either side of the central main volume is a set-back and lower building block with adjoining corner risalits. The corner risalits have rusticated corners and in the end walls five bays of unequal size. The pilasters here as well as the corner pilasters on the ground floor are rusticated. On the north-west and south-west corner a volume the width of one bay projects forward. The front facades of the corner risalits are three window bays wide. The rusticated corners project obliquely downwards on the ground floor.

On the first two storeys the majority of the windows are semi-circular and arched ended. The windows are all furnished with wooden multi-pane lights with folding-back fanlights.

Valuation

The former main building of the Ripperdakazerne from 1883-84 is of general importance by virtue of its cultural-historical and architectural-historical significance and its ensemble value as a historic-functional main component of the former barracks complex as well as by virtue of its typological value as a well-preserved example of a linear barracks from the third quarter of the nineteenth century. Furthermore, the main building by its situation at the large open forecourt also has urban-planning significance in relation to the townscape, and expresses the historic importance of Haarlem as a garrison town.
