Inleiding

Description
Introduction
In 1883-1884 built RIDING SCHOOL with four HORSE STABLES to the north-west of the stables building of the Ripperdakazerne after a design by F.R. van Roijen in sober eclectic building manner with utilitarian character.
Description
Centrally placed riding school with directly on either side thereof two pairs of horse stables. The whole stands on an H-shaped ground plan. Central element is formed by the riding school with risalits at front and rear which in siting coincides with the middle beam of the H. The riding school, partly provided with basement, is built on a rectangular ground plan and consists mostly of one storey under a broad, shallow sloping gabled roof (cross section) with red roof tiles. The masonry is built in red brick. Plinth and undersills are executed in ashlar stone. In the decoration sandstone and cement plaster are applied, such as around the upper sides of the windows. All four facades are symmetrically arranged and with the exception of the rear facade, by the use of spared areas and raised masonry, relief-rich in character. The front facade (E) has a width of seven window bays, of which the middle and the two outer bays are located in recessed spared areas. The masonry is closed off at the upper side by a powerfully raised rising motif (in the form of a baldachin drape). The facade is horizontally articulated by a sandstone list and by two dentil moulds running one above the other between the undersills and the windows below the sandstone list. These windows are arched and provided with multi-pane frames. Above the sandstone list are two pairs of narrow coupled and half-round ended windows with multi-pane frames. In the middle below the gable top is a large round window with rectangular glazing bars. The spout-shaped top gable is at the top and corner pilasters provided with urn and ball-shaped finials. The two side facades consist of six arcades formed by spared areas between raised masonry piers. In each spared area is an arched multi-pane sash window. The rear facade (W) is in conception equal to the front facade however without risalits on the facade surfaces and sculptures on the corners and the gable top. On either side of the central entrance doors are two windows which are provided with arched sash windows with multi-pane frames. Above in the gable top is, as in the front facade, a central round window placed. In the interior there is still on either side of the entrance gate a wooden gallery on brick substructure. The northern gallery is fitted out as an office. The wooden roof truss structure has a broad span and consists of nine trusses with thereupon purlins and roof boarding. On either side of the riding school stand perpendicular to both side facades two pairs of elongated horse stables on a rectangular ground plan. The stables are connected to the riding school by covered passages. The stables consist of ground floor with roof space storey under a gabled roof with black roof tiles. The buildings have each a length of twenty-five window bays, except the north-western building, which is 20 metres shorter. The original entrance doors form blind niches in the gable ends. The windows are still partly provided with original wooden multi-pane windows. In the facades are found between the windows still small iron rings for tying the horses' reins.
Valuation
The riding school with associated stable buildings from 1884 belonging to the Ripperdakazerne and remarkable H-shaped layout is of general interest by reason of the cultural-historical and architectural-historical significance as a largely well-preserved example of late nineteenth-century utilitarian architecture in service of the cavalry and by reason of the ensemble value as a historical-functional component of the former barracks complex.
