Inleiding
Dienstgebouw, voormalig patronaat gebouwd in Zakelijke stijl in 1930 ten dienste van de Rooms Katholieke kerk. Het fungeert heden als wijkcentrum. IN 1931 werd het markante beeld op de hoek aangebracht.
Omschrijving
Het goeddeels vrijstaande diepe drielaags gebouw heeft een plat dak. Het linkergedeelte is iets lager. Beide dakranden zijn afgezet met een laag rode windveerpannen. Links de deur met een excentrisch geplaatste rij vensters, die aansluiten op het bredere rechter gedeelte van de gevel. De gevel is opgetrokken uit machinale baksteen. De voor- en zijgevels zijn tot aan de iets uitkragende betonnen luifelband die de deur aan de linkerzijde en de gekoppelde tweelichtvensters afsluit in bruinrode baksteen met siermetselverband uitgevoerd. Daar boven is de baksteen geelbruin. De betonnen luifel loopt zowel aan de linkerzijde bij de deur als aan de rechterzijde boven het volgende tweelichtvenster door. De paneeldeur is geplaatst in een portiek met inspringend metselwerk en een trede van gele baksteen. Boven de betonnen luifel is een hoog rechthoekig bovenlicht van glazen bouwstenen. De vensterdorpels zijn van rood tegelwerk. De delen tussen de vensters zijn net als de luifel uitgevoerd in beton met grof grind. Rechts op de hoek is een gestileerd hardstenen beeld geplaatst van Maria met het kindje Jezus op schoot. Op beide hoeken zijn elk twee vensters met kleine bovenlichten onder een doorgaande houten luifel geplaatst. De luifel eindigt in de rechtergevel in een sierkogel. De vensterpartijden op de eerste verdieping worden onderling verbonden door een doorgaande rij rode tegels voor de vensterdorpels. De drie vensters aan de linkerzijde hebben kleine bovenlichten en een gezamenlijke wisseldorpel. Rechts boven bij de hoek begint een uitgemetselde band die als zodanig dit rechthoekige gevelvlak accentueert. Op de tweede etage is een aaneengesloten band van vensters geplaatst over beide geveldelen.
Waardering
Het voormalige dienstgebouw is van algemeen belang. Het heeft cultuurhistorische waarde als uitdrukking van de ontwikkeling van het katholicisme en de dominantie van het parochiaal werk in een industriestad in het interbellum, het is tevens van belang voor de typologische ontwikkeling van het patronaatsgebouw. Het heeft architectuurhistorische waarde als regionale variant van zakelijke stijlvormen en als zeldzame vertegenwoordiger van kubistiche stijlvormen aan een gebouw voor de katholieke kerk.

The largely detached deep three-storey building has a flat roof. The left section is slightly lower. Both roof edges are edged with a row of red wind-ridge tiles. On the left the door with an eccentrically placed row of windows, which connect to the wider right section of the facade. The facade is built of machine-made brick. The front and side facades are executed up to the slightly projecting concrete canopy that closes off the door on the left side and the coupled two-light windows in brown-red brick with decorative bond. Above that the brick is yellow-brown. The concrete canopy runs both on the left side at the door and on the right side above the next two-light window. The panel door is placed in a porch with recessed brickwork and a step of yellow brick. Above the concrete canopy is a tall rectangular fanlight of glass blocks. The window sills are of red tilework. The sections between the windows are, like the canopy, executed in concrete with coarse gravel. On the right at the corner a stylised limestone image has been placed of Mary with the Christ child on her lap. On both corners each two windows with small fanlights are placed under a continuous wooden canopy. The canopy ends in the right facade in a decorative knob. The window sections on the first floor are linked to each other by a continuous row of red tiles for the window sills. The three windows on the left side have small fanlights and a shared alternating sill. On the right above at the corner begins an articulated band that as such accentuates this rectangular facade plane. On the second storey a continuous band of windows is placed over both facade sections.
Valuation
The former service building is of general importance. It has cultural-historical value as an expression of the development of Catholicism and the dominance of parochial work in an industrial city in the interwar period, it is also of importance for the typological development of the youth centre building. It has architectural-historical value as a regional variant of business style forms and as a rare representative of cubist style forms on a building for the Catholic church.
