The register's description

The H.B.S. was built on behalf of the State between 1865 and 1867. The building was erected by architect C. Vermeijs in neo-classical style. In 1918 the building underwent thorough renovation, during which the built-in dwellings of the caretaker and principal were removed among other things. Around 1975 renovations took place, notably the installation of double windows against noise pollution and lowered ceilings. Between 1984 and 1991 various modifications took place, such as the demolition of later additions to the rear. Over time the main entrance moved from the side of the Molenstraat to the right side facade and finally to the rear facade. Moreover, the Paterslaan along the right side facade was removed and the entire site transformed into a school playground. Today the building serves as part of the accommodation for a school community.

Description

The two-storey building has a rectangular plan and two hipped roofs with a crosswise roof truss clad with black curved tiles, between which runs a broad zinc-lined valley gutter. The facades are constructed of hand-moulded brick, the plinth is of hard stone. The facades are horizontally articulated by narrow string courses beneath the windows and a broad moulding between the storeys. The facade on the Molenstraat side has a rusticated plastered central section crowned with a pediment. Within this are coupled six-pane windows on the ground floor and first floor, of which the fanlight is hinged. This is also the case with the arched six-pane windows, six on each side. Around the roof runs a plastered frieze above which is a moulded cornice and attic.

The right side facade has a broad central projection of three bays with arched windows. This projection is rusticated plastered on the ground floor and smoothly finished on the first floor. This section is crowned by a spout-shaped pediment on which an ornament is placed. On each side of the projection is one window.

The left side facade has five bays of arched six-pane windows on either side of the plastered central bay with coupled six-pane window.

The rear facade is also entirely executed in brick and contains a total of fifteen bays. From left to right there are first two arched windows, a renewed glazed door with divided fanlight, nine windows, again a renewed glazed door with divided fanlight and finally again two windows. On the first floor a series of fifteen arched windows.

The interior shows by means of a height difference of a couple of steps that the first three bays on the side of the former Paterslaan were the location of the dwellings of the principal and caretaker. Today these contain a staff room and administrative spaces. After this transverse passage a broad terrazzo floor runs the length of the building, with rooms on either side and in the middle a staircase from 1918.

The stairs have a wooden handrail and iron balusters with simple decoration. The broad panel doors all have substantial moulded posts. The spacious rooms retain the moulded string course of the original wainscoting. In the corner of each room stands a shaft with cast-iron grating, which served as hot-air heating.

In the room on the left at the end of the corridor is the chemistry laboratory from the time of construction. The work cabinets and the wainscoting, the work tables and the drain: everything of the laboratory executed in oiled wood is still present and in use. On the first floor, above the space of the former dwellings, is a room of which the original interior has been preserved. The tables and chairs are arranged on stepped platforms.

Via a wooden loft ladder one reaches the attic storey. There is a partitioned-off space here, which served as a bedroom for the principal's household staff. The roof truss structure consists of robust Philibert trusses with reinforcements at the crosswise roof truss. A door provides access to the broad space between the trusses. Beneath the attic floor runs a Cologne gutter to the rainwater drainage at the rear facade.

On the school playground stand two substantial wing walnuts with a circumference of approximately 2 metres.

Evaluation

The former HBS building is of general interest. It has cultural-historical values as evidence of the development of public education in southern Netherlands and is also of interest as an early example of the typological development of school buildings for the then new school type of the State h.b.s. It has architectural-historical value as an example of the simple, representative, dignified and balanced school architecture shortly after 1850 and is of interest as an example of the work of architect Vermeijs employed by the State. It has building-historical significance because of the Philibert trusses employed.
