Inleiding
KANTONGERECHT.
Waardering

Description
Introduction
CANTON COURT. Built in 1906 according to designs by the State Architect W.C. Metzelaar. He was at that time architect for the Ministry of Justice.
Description
The detached building has a front facade of two storeys and five window bays; it is connected by means of a narrow single-storey linking section with a two-storey annexe and these annexes are provided with a flat roof. The main building has a flat roof with on front and rear a roof shield with slates in Maas bond. The middle bay of the symmetrical building projects forward. Above the sandstone plinth the front facade is constructed of brown machine-made brick and is further articulated by means of bands of red machine-made brick. Both the corners of the building and the projection are marked by sandstone corner blocks.
The middle bay contains the entrance section with renewed double door. Above the moulded corner pieces is the two-part fanlight, a moulded sandstone lintel above which a segmental arch of red brick and a sandstone keystone. In the spandrel is a tile panel. In the middle the coat of arms of the Netherlands, a climbing crowned lion in blue and yellow, with at both sides olive leaf borders on a light-green ground. The projection has on the first storey a broad four-light window with a tile panel in the spandrel. In the middle the coat of arms of Helmond, flanked by oak-leaf sprigs on a light-green ground. The windows on the ground floor and the two left windows on the first storey have a renewed T-pattern, the framework is painted white. The windows have sandstone sills and lintels, a segmental arch with a woven pattern in the colours red, blue and yellow. The floor levels of the solid walls are indicated by means of curved iron ornamental wall anchors.
The two windows on the right on the first storey are arched sash windows with a leaded-light fanlight with a stylised symmetrical pattern. This differing window form on front, side and rear facade corresponds with the special function, namely courtroom. The projection breaks through the white-painted gutter line on scroll brackets and has at that height a rectangular sandstone plaque with the name canton court. In the tower is a coupled six-pane round-arch window. In the roof plane next to the tower are two roof dormers with aedicule moulding and a curved pediment. The tower has a gutter line on brackets, a hipped roof with slates in Maas bond and a decorated iron weathervane.
The left side facade is blank, in the right side facade are some windows and centrally a built-up chimney. Behind the building is a garden with various old deciduous trees, probably dating from the period of construction.
Interior Behind the entrance is a lobby and a rectangular hall with staircase. The majority of the panel doors is original and sometimes still provided with the old handles.
The ceiling of the hall consists of barrel vaults on steel profile beams. The stair treads and risers are of sandstone. The balustrade has a varnished wooden handrail and is further executed in wrought iron with various ornamental motifs. On the first storey is the courtroom. This room contains a high wooden wainscoting with cushion panelling and a list with acanthus-leaf consoles. The plastered ceiling has a heavily moulded geometric pattern, from a centre circle with connecting fields, chiefly consisting of rectangles and diamond shapes. Via this room one enters the rest room and study of the judge, renovated in the nineteen-sixties.
Via a wooden ladder stairs one reaches the attic storey. The roof truss is executed in pine wood and provided with edge moulding.
Valuation
The canton court is of general importance. It has cultural-historical value as an illustration of the development of the judiciary in the nineteenth century and as a specimen of the typological development of the justice building in smaller towns. It has architectural-historical importance as an example of the development of the representative, authority-expressing State architecture and as an example of the work of architect Metzelaar. It has been preserved in sound condition inside and out.
