Inleiding

Description
Introduction
DWELLING with attached BARN in Cubist-Expressionist style with Amsterdam School elements, designed by architect H. Zondag (1896-1982) in Kollum for (municipal) secretary Kruizenga in 1928. The seemingly modest design stands out for its balanced use of materials, with elements recurring down to the finest detail, such as tiles in frieze and platform, the colour and variation in the jointing and internally the design of windows and door frames. The dwelling stands on a narrow plot on the north side of the east-west running main axis of old Kollum, and forms a twentieth-century continuation of the historical villa development along this axis. The dwelling is, apart from a few minor alterations to windows on the upper storeys in the side facade, very well preserved. Internally, behind new tiles and door panels, many original interior components remain. A wrought-iron flagpole bracket against the south-western corner of the facade is missing; the lower-positioned concrete base is still present. On the north-east side of the house, an intermediate section and garage have been added to the original barn; these new additions fall outside national protection, as does a wooden barn at the back of the garden.
Description
The dwelling is built in red sintered brick on a plinth of soapstone in two storeys, on a rectangular floor plan, under a flat roof, with a rectangular extension on the east side, also under a flat roof. A continuous cornice, with concrete block-shaped accents and below it a frieze of reddish-brown tile fields surrounded by drip mouldings, crowns the facades. The jointing is recessed horizontally and a soft pink colour vertically. Through recessed and projecting elements such as balconies, a bay window, moulded flower boxes and similar, the block-shaped main volume gains a plastic character, with emphasis on the front facade. There a centrally moulded chimney forms a strong vertical accent with a shallow three-sided bay window under a flat roof with gutter line to its left; to its right, beneath a moulded balcony, the entrance, formed by a parabola-shaped opening in the porch with a concrete triangular keystone; set back, a wooden front door with fanlight and three-pane side lights with leaded glass; moulded flower boxes either side of the entrance; platform with reddish-brown tiles and brick surround. The windows of the upper storey and the bay window are divided into three sections; the fanlights of the bay windows have leaded glass. Other details on the facade are a concrete flagpole bracket against the left corner of the facade; a wrought-iron curled decoration against the top right of the chimney; wooden flower box beneath the left upper-storey window. In the left side facade, a continuous drip moulding directly above the windows is broken by a central, slightly projecting chimney flue, beneath its base a moulded bench with wooden seat. On the right side facade, an extension flows into the moulded balustrade of a balcony; besides a number of standing windows, there are two horizontal windows with leaded glass. The rear facade is flat; French doors to the garden with four panes, opening sections and three-pane side lights; platform of brownish-red tiles with brick surround. The attached BARN, on a rectangular floor plan and under a flat overhanging roof, matches the dwelling in material and form. The FLOOR PLAN is virtually entirely original; the INTERIOR contains many original components, such as among others beamed ceilings, the wooden staircase with balustrade and tiling.
