Inleiding
WINKELWOONHUIS, gelegen op de hoek van de Dr. Poelstraat en de Geleenstraat in het centrum van Heerlen, was oorspronkelijk in gebruik door wijnhandel Tissen. Het pand is gebouwd in 1939 naar ontwerp van architect F.P.J. Peutz en het ontwerp bevat elementen van de Nieuwe Zakelijkheid. De eerste bouwlaag, waar het winkelgedeelte zich bevindt, is wit geschilderd, wat niet oorspronkelijk is en afbreuk doet aan het gebouw en dus is UITGESLOTEN VAN BESCHERMING.
Omschrijving
Het WINKELWOONHUIS heeft een rechthoekige plattegrond, vier bouwlagen onder een plat dak en is geheel onderkelderd. De vierde laag lijkt minder hoog dan de andere lagen, maar heeft terugliggende verhoging in het plafond. Dit is het terugliggend geveldeel boven de vierde laag. De twee gevels, beide gelegen aan de straatzijde, zijn bekleed met de natuursteen Brouvilliers, een beplating in diverse formaten. In de gevels zijn rechthoekige en vierkante stalen kozijnen met roedeverdeling geplaatst en rechthoekige houten deuren. In het geheel van de gevels zijn in de tweede en derde laag grote vierkante vensters geplaatst, die worden omringd door kleinere of smallere vensters. Daar waar de twee gevels samenkomen is de winkelentree geplaatst. De entree met enkele deur is gelegen onder een naar buiten toe schuin oplopende latei. Deze afschuining wordt over de volle hoogte van de gevel voortgezet.
In de RECHTERZIJGEVEL zijn in de eerste laag twee grote en een klein etalagevenster, hiernaast bevindt zich de entree naar het woongedeelte. De LINKERZIJGEVEL heeft in de eerste laag één etalagevenster.
Waardering
De voormalige wijnhandel Thissen bezit cultuurhistorische waarden vanwege het belang van het pand als voorbeeld voor de typologische ontwikkeling van winkelwoonhuizen. SHOP-DWELLING HOUSE, located on the corner of the Dr. Poelstraat and the Geleenstraat in the centre of Heerlen, was originally used by wine merchant Tissen.
