Inleiding
Voormalig winkel-warenhuis 'Schunck'; blokvormig, dubbel onderkelderd, vijf bouwlagen tellend plat gedekt winkel-warenhuis met twee lagen tellende dakwoning, ook bekend als 'Glaspaleis'.
Beschrijving
Door architect ir. F.P.J.

Description
Introduction
Former shop-warehouse 'Schunck'; block-shaped, double basement, five-storey flat-roofed shop-warehouse with two-storey residential apartment, also known as 'Glass Palace'.
Description
Shop-warehouse built by architect ir. F.P.J. Peutz between 1933 and 1936 on commission of entrepreneur P. Schunck with reinforced concrete supporting structure provided with mushroom floors and curtain walls. In 1974 the original steel profiles with transparent glass were replaced by aluminium and smoked glass whilst against the south façade a six-storey indifferent extension in the same materials was erected. On all storeys identical, rhythmically divided by columns floor area; lowest two storeys with round columns with round heads seamlessly adjoining the floor slabs, from the third storey onwards octagonal columns are used with likewise octagonal column heads and slabs that pass directly into each other; the floor slabs project almost two metres and support the transparent curtain wall; air gap between floors and curtain walls for natural ventilation, to which effect removable hatches are fitted on the roof. Vertical access by means of three lifts (private, clientele, goods) and two stairs (staff and clientele). On the roof a residential apartment for builder Schunck and his family as well as a former restaurant with roof terrace; residential apartment on L-shaped floor plan, the internal wall partly treated as a curtain wall and the whole having the original steel (pivot) windows; spiral staircase in reinforced concrete with (not original) surrounding cylindrical glazed stairwell with wooden muntins; tiled bathroom with terrazzo floor, likewise the other sanitary rooms. On the north-east side the residential apartment has a flat-roofed bay window on a circular floor plan in glass and steel. Roof terrace and residential apartment with balustrade and provided with rails for the window cleaner's cabin.
Valuation
The 'Glass Palace' represents architectural historical value: it has been well preserved in structural terms and forms an early example of a building constructed according to the principles of Functionalism: the building has a visible structure of reinforced concrete and mushroom floors, receives optimal daylight from three sides and thereby stands entirely in service of the shop function; thanks to this realised architectural concept the 'Glass Palace' assumes a remarkable stylistic position within the oeuvre of Peutz. The 'Glass Palace' derives historical-urban planning value from its striking placement in the old city centre: it bridges a height difference of 2.50 m and stands on the boundary of two squares; furthermore the 'Glass Palace' symbolises a phase in the development from old to new Heerlen, not least because of the contrast with the neighbouring Sint Pancratiuskerk.
For the history of retail trade and retail commerce 'Schunck' is of significance because of the pioneering spirit expressed in the organisation of the building and the spatial planning; in light of the period of origin c.q. time of crisis this consideration gains an extra historical dimension.
