Inleiding
Het WARENHUIS is het voormalige winkelhuis Kneepkens en is gelegen in de bocht van de Dr. Poelsstraat. Het pand is echter ontworpen voor een ligging in een gesloten straatwand, tegenover de voormalige HEMA. Het pand is gebouwd in 1939 tegen aan achterzijde gelegen winkel, naar ontwerp van architect F.P.J. Peutz en bevat elementen van het Nieuwe Bouwen. Het volume is trapsgewijs oplopend.
Omschrijving
Het WARENHUIS heeft een onregelmatige L-vormige plattegrond in vier bouwlagen en een souterrain, en is gelegen onder platte daken. De gevels zijn wit gepleisterd en in de gevels bevinden zich grote rechthoekige stalen en aluminium vensters met roedeverdeling, gedeeltelijk als vliesgevel. Houten deuren.
De VOORGEVEL aan Dr. Poelsstraat heeft in de eerste bouwlaag een centraal gelegen entree met aan weerszijden etalages. De entree heeft twee houten deuren. De ACHTERGEVEL heeft geheel links een volume van vier bouwlagen, ter plaatse van het trappenhuis en is blind. Rechts hiervan staat een volume van twee bouwlagen, dit is de voor de bouw reeds bestaande winkel. Achter dit volume ligt een volume van vier bouwlagen, waarvan de bovenste twee per bouwlaag een breed venster hebben.
De STRUCTUUR VAN HET INTERIEUR is in redelijke mate in tact hetgeen blijkt uit de situering van de trappenhuizen, gangen en voormalige verkoopruimten. Kenmerkend voor het gebouw is de toepassing van paddestoelkolommen. Deze zijn geplaatst in twee rijen van drie kolommen, waardoor de ruimte vrij indeelbaar is.
Waardering
Het winkelpand Kneepkens bezit cultuurhistorische waarden vanwege het belang voor de typologische ontwikkeling van winkelhuizen, vanwege de vrij-indeelbare verkoopruimte.
