Inleiding

Introduction

PHARMACY, named pharmacy Claessens, was built in 1918 to a design by architect J. Klijnen in Heerlen and contains neo-plastic elements of De Stijl. The rear facade is characterised by a more traditional building style. The building is, with an adjacent building, still in use as a pharmacy. On the first and second floor there is a residential section. For use as a pharmacy in 1940 a rear extension of two storeys was demolished and replaced by a volume of one storey up to the building behind. For this reason new windows were placed in the second storey and the facade was painted. In the third storey the door was replaced by a window. EXCLUDED FROM PROTECTION are the extension of one storey and the two roof windows on the rear roof plane.

Description

The PHARMACY has a rectangular floor plan in three storeys with a gabled roof with pan tiles. The facades have a facing of brick, the front facade with brickwork in cross-bond and natural stone plinth and the rear facade in half-brick bond and is painted white. In the facades there are rectangular wooden doors and windows with fanlights with glazing bars, in the front facade only horizontal division. The FRONT FACADE has horizontal wooden canopies of varying depth and width located above and below windows and doors, and painted in alternating red and brown. In the first storey there is the front door originally with three steps, located under two canopies. Next to this there are three large windows located under three canopies, located at the location of the former pharmacy. Far left there is a low wooden door under a canopy and a small rectangular window. In the second storey there are two large windows with fanlight with glazing bars between projecting facade parts and located under and above canopies on consoles. The upper canopy runs through above a smaller two-part window with glazing bars, located above and below double canopies. In the third storey there is a double window with glazing bars and wooden door with leaded glass, located between and separated by brick lisenes. The lisenes begin above a recessed row of brick. Below the windows and the door there are canopies, above them there are three continuous canopies, the uppermost with four balls. Above the door there is a small window. The recessed mezzanine with canopy runs across the full width of the building. On the left there is a low window and on the right a low roof dormer between canopies, located between the overhanging gutter. The roof has chimneys on the left and right and on the left was originally a blind roof dormer. On the facade there is a sign with 'Apotheek' and a mixing bowl in brown and red.

The first storey of the REAR FACADE runs through to the building behind. In the second storey there are three windows, and a window and a door. The third storey has four windows. Furthermore a gutter on brackets, and a roof with two new roof windows and two chimneys.

The STRUCTURE OF THE INTERIOR of the first storey is moderately intact. The original waiting room is now office, the part behind forms one whole with adjacent corner building. The dwelling on the first and second floor is highly intact and clearly recognisable as such. The staircase to the second storey initially runs along the facade, but ends at right angles to it, in the middle of the building.

Valuation

Pharmacy Claessens possesses cultural-historical values owing to the typology and the function as a pharmacy. The architectural-historical values are determined by the particular importance of the building for the history of architecture, owing to the neo-plastic design of the front facade. Owing to the importance of the design for the oeuvre of architect J. Klijnen, connected to Heerlen, owing to the high-quality aesthetic qualities of the design and the ornamentation. Furthermore owing to the particular coherence between exterior and interior through the spiral arrangement of the front facade which is reflected in the location of the stairwell in the interior. The pharmacy is of particular significance for the appearance of the city of Heerlen. Pharmacy Claessens is of general importance owing to the architectural integrity and the high-quality architectural-historical rarity of the design and of exceptional importance owing to the architectural-historical value.
