Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
BIOSCOPE ROYAL, situated on the corner of Stationsplein, was built in 1937 at the commission of the brothers Van Bergen. The design in functionalist style is by architect F.P.J. Peutz and J. Bongaerts and executed by the firm Tummers in Sittard. The shape of the plot has been decisive for the design, whereby the plastic possibilities of concrete have been optimally utilised.
Description
The BIOSCOPE is situated on triangular terrain. The ground plan has roughly the form of a half oval, with the short end adjoining the neighbouring development. The building has three and four storeys with a flat roof and the top layer is set back in part. In the rendered facades, grey in colour from coal dust, are situated square steel windows.
The front facade with entrance is situated on a rounded corner, the entrance has a recent glazed shop front with doors. In the second and third layer, at the location of foyer and offices, is a row of eight steel windows with vertical glazing bars. The fourth layer is set back, is plastically shaped and runs out into a centrally located round volume with windows. The film booth is only accessible from outside. In front of the booth stands "ROYAL" in large neon letters.
The right side facade has on the left in the first layer a glazed shop front in aluminium profile for the announcement of films and recent light advertising. The latter is placed below ten windows. To the right of this is a large window without glazing bars. On the left in the second and third layer two rows of windows begin. In the second layer, there is an oriel-like extension of one layer with rounded corners and flat roof. The oriel has ten windows, of which two are rounded on the corner. At the far right in the fourth layer are three windows.
The left side facade has at the far left two projecting volumes of two storeys, situated in front of a volume of four storeys. The left volume has two metal doors and the right one has closed window and door openings. The volume of four storeys is curved to the right and has two niches for emergency exits and in the fourth layer three windows with leaded lights in mouse-tooth profile. The curve extends to the foyer and office windows. In the second layer is an oriel-like extension as in the right side facade, with seven windows of which two are rounded. Below the oriel begins a row with six square windows with below them a glazed shop front in aluminium profile for film announcements.
The structure of the interior and various interior components are intact to a very high degree. The construction of concrete columns is at the location of the facades filled with concrete and brick. In the foyer and entrance hall are mushroom columns and steel truss girders have been used for the roof structure. The shell-shaped ceiling in the hall provides for indirect daylight admission and the ventilation system for the hall was developed by the architect.
Valuable interior components include among others the oval-shaped hall with shell-shaped ceiling, the stage with orchestra pit, the original staircases with panelling continuing in hall, foyer and hall.
Valuation
The bioscope possesses cultural-historical value as a distinctive expression of a cultural and technical development and due to the innovative value of among others the ventilation system. The architectural-historical values are determined by the particular significance of the building for the history of architecture and building technique and the importance for the oeuvre of architects Peutz and Bongaerts. The design of the bioscope is of high aesthetic quality and is of significance through the application of the use of materials, the ornamentation and the coherence between exterior and interior. The bioscope is of significance due to the location in the centre of Heerlen and of particular significance for the appearance of the city. The bioscope as regards the interior and exterior is architecturally intact to a very high degree and is thereby of general importance and possesses a regional architectural-historical rarity.
