Inleiding

Waardering

Introduction

The OFFICE BUILDING is the former head office of the "NV Mij tot Exploitatie van Limburgsche Steenkoolmijnen named Oranje Nassau Mijnen" or Oranje Nassau I. The building was constructed in 1931 in functionalist style according to a design by ir. D. Roosenburg of Den Haag. In designing the building's construction, account was taken of possible mining subsidence. In 1995-1996 the building was completely restored by the office Jo Coenen & Co Architecten, after which it was taken into use by the Rijks Geologische Dienst. In 1979 the main entrance with canopy and stairs at the rear facade was removed to create a connection to the other offices. These were demolished during restoration for reconstruction of the main entrance with canopy.

Description

The OFFICE BUILDING has a rectangular floor plan, situated in four storeys under a projecting flat roof. On either side of the building is a stairwell that projects above the roof. The building's construction consists of a steel frame with brick parapet, which is clad with sheet steel. The original colour is green. The steel frame has a bay width of 1.80 m, with foundations on steel throughout. The facades have a brick facing, mainly clad with sheet steel. The facades contain principally rectangular steel window frames with single glazing and glazing bars located between narrow mullions, so that they appear as horizontal bands. The FRONT FACADE facing east has a recessed first storey with square windows. The second, third and fourth storeys have full-width horizontal bands of glass above a low parapet. At the far left is a freely closed projecting rectangular stairwell volume, with vertical bands of glass. On the right of the facade is a second recessed stairwell.

The RIGHT SIDE FACADE on the north side has in the first storey an outward-projecting brick volume and on the left in the upper storeys a closed facade plane recessed in relation to the rest of the facade. In this recession is located the second stairwell with a twelve-sided floor plan with glass in vertical bands. The stairwell rises above the roof and is constricted below a flat and slightly projecting roof. The right facade plane has in the second through fourth storeys five rows of windows. This begins on the left with a rectangular window or door and continues with a series of connected square windows until reaching the rear facade.

The REAR FACADE on the west side has a recessed first storey of brick in which individual windows are located. On the left it has an outward-projecting brick volume under a flat roof. In this facade plane are situated several doors and a horizontal band with windows. To the right of this volume runs a stair to the second storey. The upper storeys have full-width horizontal bands of glass above a low parapet. At the far left is a closed volume with at the very left a narrow vertical band of glass. On the right is a recessed closed volume. The LEFT SIDE FACADE on the south side is relatively closed and consists of a number of volumes of varying height. The middle projecting volume has three horizontal bands with windows.

The INTERIOR of the office building is freely divisible. On either side of a centrally located corridor, running parallel to the building's length, are steel columns between which glass walls can be placed. The stairwell has a facing of exposed brickwork.

Valuation

The former head office of the Oranje Nassau mines possesses cultural-historical value as a particular expression of a social-economic, technical and typological development. The architectural-historical values are determined by the particular importance of the building for the history of architecture and building techniques, due to its construction. Furthermore, the building is of significance for the oeuvre of ir. D. Roosenburg, due to the high-quality aesthetic qualities of the design, the use of materials and the particular coherence between exterior and interior. The building is of particular significance for the townscape of Heerlen and is an architectural-historical and building-technical rarity. The building is of general importance due to its stylistic significance as a representative of Functionalism and as an example of a modern office building from 1931.
