Omschrijving
Een in een voormalig door L.A. Springer ontworpen doolhof gelegen HERMITAGE of kluizenaarsgrot stamt vermoedelijk uit 1883-1884. Het object is samengesteld uit sintels, baksteen, slakken en onregelmatig gevormde stenen die met behulp van cement tot een grot zijn samengevoegd. Het dak, dat voor een groot deel is ingestort, wordt gedragen door spoorrails.
In het midden van de grot is van het hierboven genoemde materiaal een pijler gemetseld die het dak ondersteunt. Achter deze pijler bevindt zich een beeld van een zittende monnik, waarvan het hoofd ontbreekt. De monnik houdt met een hand een kruis voor de borst, terwijl hij in zijn andere hand een boek vasthield.
De grot stond in het centrum van de doolhof. Op het dak zat een waterreservoir, die als bezoekers nadat zij de doolhof hadden doorlopen en de grot waren binnengetreden, opengezet kon worden waardoor een watergordijn voor de ingang ontstond. Een ander en enig voorbeeld van dergelijke grot met watergordijn is in het park Sonsbeek te vinden.

A HERMITAGE or hermit's grotto located in a maze formerly designed by L.A. Springer, presumably dates from 1883-1884. The object is composed of cinders, brick, slag and irregularly shaped stones which have been joined together into a cave with the aid of cement. The roof, which has largely collapsed, is supported by railway rails.
In the middle of the cave a pillar has been constructed from the above-mentioned material which supports the roof. Behind this pillar is a statue of a seated monk, of which the head is missing. The monk holds a cross to his chest with one hand, while he held a book in his other hand.
The cave stood in the centre of the maze. On the roof was a water reservoir, which could be opened for visitors after they had worked their way through the maze and entered the cave, thereby creating a water curtain in front of the entrance. Another and the only other example of such a cave with water curtain is to be found in the Sonsbeek park.
Valuation
The hermitage is of general importance because of its cultural and architectural-historical value as a very rare example of a hermit's hut from the third quarter of the 19th century, which forms part of a maze designed by the garden architect L.A.
