Inleiding

Introduction

The PUMP STATION with associated COAL SHED and ECONOMISER on the Van Weerdenpoelmanweg in Soestduinen was built in 1902 on the instructions of the 'Utrechtse Waterleiding-Maatschappij' (Utrecht Water Supply Company) as a replacement for an older pump station from 1882. The site on which the pump station of 1902 was built was first excavated in order to get closer to the groundwater. This was necessary because the pumps of that time did not yet have the capacity to pump water from below a certain depth to the surface. The new building of 1902 had to accommodate a more powerful steam engine in order to meet the ever-growing demand for piped water. This new steam engine was capable of pumping a thousand cubic metres of water per hour to the surface. In 1923 the pump station was extended on the left side with a building volume under a flat roof. The central risalit of the extension had a low gabled roof. This extension was intended for a more powerful diesel pump. During the last renovation of 1992 this building volume received a different roof, as a result of which the original appearance was disturbed and therefore falls outside the protection. Against the rear facade of the main volume, an annex was also built in 1923 for a so-called economiser, which reused steam for heating the water in the steam boilers.

The pump station was taken out of operation in the late nineteen sixties of the 20th century. After years of relative vacancy, it was decided in the late nineteen eighties to restore the station and demolish the post-war extensions; the chimney next to the boiler house had already been demolished in the early nineteen eighties. With a view to the current museum function as a water supply museum, the interior was meticulously restored. For the new function as a meeting place, the former building was adapted. The machine hall was given a museum arrangement. The installed collection consists of a number of pump machines, including a diesel engine which can still be put into operation. Against the rear facade of the 1923 extension, a new wing was built for a regional office. This extension, executed in keeping with the style, falls outside the protection. The former pump building from 1912, originally containing a diesel pump, now serves as the main entrance.

Description

A pump station situated some distance away and parallel to the road with a coal shed (left) and economiser building (right) attached to the rear facade, each single-storey building volumes under a gabled roof covered with roof tiles in cross pattern. All facades of the main volume, consisting of the machine hall and boiler house, are executed in grey brickwork which is decorated in neo-Renaissance style with natural stone string courses, a moulding at the height of the sill level and corner stones in the arched spans above the windows. The facades of the coal shed and economiser building are principally executed in wood. The gables of the coal shed and the facades of the economiser building are clad with beading. The symmetrically arranged front facade of the main volume (machine hall) is five bays long with a central risalit with a spout gable of one bay. Herein is located the original entrance, consisting of a double door with a round-arched fanlight, furnished with glazing bars in shell motif. Above this is affixed a natural stone plaque with the text 'Utrechtse Waterleiding-Maatschappij'. At the top is a cast-iron circular window. The central risalit has a spout gable crest with natural stone coping plates, with an outjutting shoulder piece laid up at the corners. On either side of the risalit the facade is two bays wide, divided by means of laid-up pilasters. Beneath the roof gutter an outjutting frieze is laid up of flattened arches on natural stone corbels. Both side facades of the machine hall are spout gables with shoulder pieces, a climbing frieze of flat arches on natural stone corbels and a natural stone corbel spout gable crest. The side facades of the boiler house have a division in conformity with the front facade. At the left side facade one window is narrowed in order to make the connection of this building volume to the 1923 extension possible. The rear facade of the main volume (boiler house) is largely obscured from view by the coal shed (left) and economiser building (right). It has a three-bay division with pilasters, which connect to the climbing frieze beneath the gable coping of the spout gable. In the central axis is a cast-iron grille window. On the apex pinnacle of the spout gable a wrought-iron crest is placed.

The original division, consisting of a machine hall, boiler house, coal storage and economiser building, has been left largely intact, although some adjustments were made to the interior during the museum phase of restoration in 1992-1994. The valuable architectural and structural elements of the interior are the Polonceau trusses, the guide beams for the hoisting mechanism and the tiled walls with faceted tiles in the boiler house and the machine hall. In the interior, an Art Nouveau cabinet wall from the insurance office 'de Utrecht' was installed during restoration. Also of great value is the economiser and the interior of the coal shed where the sloping brick wall, along which the coal rolled down, recalls the original function.

In front of the pump station lies an open lawn which slopes up towards the road. The plot is bounded on the street side by a picket fence. The openness of the plot is of great supplementary value in relation to the pump station.

Valuation

The Soestduinen pump station is of general interest because of its cultural and architectural historical value as a typologically good example of a utility building from the beginning of the 20th century which forms part of the development of drinking water supply in the Netherlands. The building is a rare and relatively well-preserved example of a pump building with neo-Renaissance detailing from the beginning of the 20th century, of which the main division and various interior elements have also been preserved. The object is characteristically situated on an open lawn and as such markedly positioned.
