Inleiding

Introduction

The (former) AGRICULTURAL BARN belongs to the complex of the Psychiatric Hospital in Franeker, which was realised in the early 1930s as an outpatient department of the already existing Institution within the city moat. The agricultural barn was built as: "Barn with work and storage spaces and pig sties". This is the description of the building on the construction drawing from 1932 by the designer, municipal architect M.B. van Dorth. The need for a work space on the grounds of the hospital fitted within the new ideas about the care of mentally ill patients, which had already caused many changes in healthcare since the last decades of the previous century. It was believed that the so-called "occupational therapy" would promote the healing process. Patients were no longer to be confined to a room, but they were also to be active and labour was seen as part of their therapeutic activities. The barn is located to the west of the site, to the north of the Harlingerweg and nowadays outside the current hospital grounds, on a fairly isolated open area. The front facade faces east. To the south of the barn is the tea pavilion. The barn is built in a building style in which elements of the Amsterdam School and Interbellum architecture are applied. The large thatched roof and the building material used are in keeping with the landscape of the Frisian countryside and the function of the building. The barn is now owned by the municipality, no longer serves its original function and is rented out to third parties.

The INTERIOR has been completely altered and does not qualify for protection.

Description

The barn has a rectangular floor plan and is covered by a thatched hipped roof with half-hipped roof and ridge thatch at the ridge. The barn is one storey high and has a tall loft space beneath the large thatched roof. The building materials used for the facades are brick and wood. The facades are built up to the window sill of the window sections in brown brick. The mortar joints are recessed, the cross joints filled. From this height, the brickwork up to below the thatched roof is clad with whitewashed wooden parts.

The front facade and the rear facade are identical. In the middle is a wide wooden sliding door, to which two window strips are added on the left and right, in the form of horizontal side lights. The strips are five-part and each part window consists of three lights. On the right, three of the five windows are casement windows. At the top, under the half-hipped roof of the thatch, a strip of four horizontally positioned cross windows is placed. The two middle ones are top-hung windows.

The south and north facades are built in brick up to the sill of the horizontal window sections and provided with a three-part window with a three-light window, one of which is a casement window. This window is half placed on the brick wall, half against the wooden parts. To the right of it, beneath the continuous thatched roof, is a horizontal window section consisting of two rows of windows with cross glazing bars. The upper row consists of top-hung windows. Above this continuous roof section is a low roof dormer with a window section of six low, horizontally positioned three-light windows. To the right of it is a wooden sliding door with, adjacent to it, partly on the wooden parts, a horizontal window section. This consists of eight horizontally positioned six-light windows, five of which are casement windows.
