Inleiding

Introduction

The MAIN BUILDING of the Psychiatric HOSPITAL, which is situated in a rural setting at the edge and to the west of the town of Franeker, was built between 1928 and 1930. The new Institution was realized as a result of the fact that the Medical Institution within the town boundaries could not provide sufficient capacity to accommodate the growing number of patients and furthermore no longer met the renewed views on proper care of patients with mental illness. On 17 October 1928 the foundation stone was laid, on 24 October 1930 the new hospital was officially opened.

The main building is situated on the north side of the grounds, to the west of the avenue that runs perpendicular in a northerly direction from the Harlingerweg. The building is oriented towards the north. The building, designed by E. & Th.R. Knevel from Ermelo, was designed in a building style with elements derived from Business Expressionism. Between 1978 and 1980 the building was extended with an addition to the western wing. The WALKING PARK for the patients, which was laid out around the main building, dates from the nineteen thirties. The path layout is to a large extent still original. At the front of the main building there is nowadays a large pond with winding paths, trees and shrubs. Originally between the pond and the building lay two small round beds with low shrubs; the path has been replaced by a way of concrete paving stones. At the rear the original path layout is still largely present: it consists of winding paths and straight paths with shrubs and special trees in between - including acacias and golden rain trees. The path layout at the main building was laid out according to geometric shapes, becoming more winding towards the rear.

Description

The building has an elongated, bent ground plan, with the convex front facade facing north. It is covered by a composite roof with black Dutch tiles. The building consists of three equal parts. The central section is three storeys high, the other two parts are two storeys high. The central section is crowned by a high pediment and emphasized by a bowed bay. The covered main entrance was later placed here. Originally there were solely two entrances at the ends of the central section. To the left and right of this broad central section are the two equally long wings placed symmetrically. The wings are terminated by a transverse block. To the western wing a cross-shaped building section was added in 1978-'80 which is linked to the old section by an L-shaped building section. The two wings are emphasized in the middle, both at the front and at the rear, by in total four large building blocks. The plinth is constructed in red brick, the remainder of the building in brown brick. In the front facade of the central section there are two covered entrances on the left and right. The main entrance is now placed in the middle of the bay and is not original. The bay and pediment emphasize the central projection which is five bays wide. In the pediment the name of the main building is displayed in natural stone with above it the coat of arms of Franeker. A balustrade of brick piers with cast-iron railings in between adorns the balcony above the bay. The two-part and three-part windows - cross windows - with four-pane fanlights are arranged regularly and one above the other across the facade. In the third storey are seventeen horizontal two-part and three-part windows (without fanlight). In the roof slopes above the front facade two wooden dormers with flat roofs and hinged two-part windows are placed.

In the front facades of the side wings cross windows are placed. In the additions five-part windows are placed in the middle. In the roof slopes of the side wings a total of twelve dormers are placed at the front, plus two on the roof slopes of the additions.

On the south side, in the rear facade, are bowed multi-part cross windows set under brick arches. In the central section are the rear entrances on the left and right and two closed loggias. In the second storey are five-part cross windows. In the rear facades of the terminating blocks are elongated windows and cross windows. Long, multi-part wooden dormers are placed on the roof slopes of the various sections; on the smaller additions two-part wooden dormers.

In the side facades, the main facades of the small terminating blocks on the east and west sides, in the first and second storey, arranged symmetrically, are four cross windows and in the middle a six-part cross window. On the roof slope above, also an elongated, multi-pane wooden dormer is placed on both sides.

At the front of the main building there is nowadays a large pond with winding paths, trees and shrubs. Originally between the pond and the building lay two small round beds with low shrubs; the path has been replaced by a way of concrete paving stones laid in the form of the building. At the rear the original path layout is still largely present; it consists of winding paths and straight paths with shrubs and special trees in between, including acacias and golden rain trees. The path layout close to the main building was laid out according to geometric shapes, becoming winding towards the rear.
