Inleiding

Technische gegevens: doorvaartwijdte 8,25 meter; rijwegbreedte 3,20 meter; maximale belasting 3,5 ton (was 5 ton).

Introduction

The Half Twelfth bridge, a DRAWBRIDGE which derives its name from the original location between lock eleven and twelve in the Zuid-Willemsvaart, is provided on the drawhead with some neo-gothic ornament and is presumed to date from the second half of the nineteenth century. The bridge originally lay over the approximately 120 kilometre long Zuid-Willemsvaart which was dug between 1822 and 1826. The bridge connected Brugstraat with Kalkweg in Someren. In 2007 the bridge was relocated to the Helenavaart in Griendtsveen. The bridge abutments and the bridge keeper's house were not relocated.

Technical data: navigation width 8.25 metres; roadway width 3.20 metres; maximum load 3.5 tonnes (was 5 tonnes). In 1948 the bascule, after suffering war damage (1940 and 1944), was renewed and the drawhead and balance were repaired and partly replaced. In 1988 the hand operation of the winch was replaced by hydraulic drive and thereafter replaced again by a hydraulic cylinder, which drives the balance. Beside the bridge an iron control booth.

Description

The drawbridge is a riveted iron bascule bridge with round arch in the drawhead. The upper edge of the drawhead displays four circular openwork ornaments, the spandrels of the draw arch display quatrefoils. The bascule consists of two I-profile beams tapering towards the ends, which are connected to each other by riveted trusswork. Bascule with wooden deck on iron trusswork.

Valuation

The Half Twelfth bridge is of general importance. The object has cultural-historical value as an expression of the opening up of North Brabant through the construction of waterways and is also significant as an example of the typological development of drawbridges over waterways in the second half of the nineteenth century. The object has architectural-historical value through the application of sober neo-gothic ornament, for enrichment and reinforcement of the construction. The object also has industrial-archaeological value as an example of the application of riveted iron connections. The drawbridge, despite later repairs, is still rare as one of the oldest examples of this bridge type in North Brabant.
