Inleiding
De Villa Spagnum werd in 1897 gebouwd naar een ontwerp van architect Jac. van Groenendael in chaletstijl. In 1901 werd de villa verbouwd naar een ontwerp van architect Kooken uit Eindhoven. Opdrachtgever was de familie Van der Griendt.
De villa is centraal gelegen in het dorp Griendtsveen. Op korte afstand bevinden zich de villa Erica en de resterende tien van de oorspronkelijk twaalf zogenoemde Apostelwoningen.
Omschrijving
Vrijstaande villa met een veelhoekig grondplan. De gevels zijn niet symmetrisch ingedeeld. Het pand is wit gesaust. Het pand telt twee bouwlagen plus dakverdieping. Het dak wordt gedekt met zadeldaken met leien in schubdekking. Houten bakgoten op consoles.
Linkerdeel van de voorgevel springt vooruit en loopt uit in een topgevel met hierin houten beschot op houten consoles. In de eerste en tweede bouwlaag van dit geveldeel rechthoekige niet authentieke vensters en vensterluiken. Alle overige vensters van de villa zijn eveneens niet authentiek. Natuurstenen dorpelstenen. In de topgevel een rechthoekig venster. Alle vensters in de voorgevel met rondboogvormige vulstukken.
Rechterdeel van de voorgevel is terugliggend met in het linkergeveldeel de voordeur met hierboven een niet authentiek balkon met metalen balustrade. Dubbele balkondeuren eveneens niet authentiek. In het rechtergeveldeel in de eerste en tweede bouwlaag een rechthoekig venster met luiken.
Rechterzijgevel eveneens asymmetrisch ingedeeld. Tegen de eerste bouwlaag een grote aangebouwde veranda met plat dak met hierop een balkon. Het linkerdeel van de rechter zijgevel loopt uit in een topgevel met houten beschot op houten consoles. In deze topgevel een tweetal kleine rechthoekige vensters. Het rechtergeveldeel wordt boven de tweede bouwlaag afgedekt met een plat dak met hierop een smeedijzeren balustrade. Vensters in de rechterzijgevel deels met rondboogvormig vulstuk.
Achtergevel met een gevarieerde opbouw. Tegen het middendeel van de achtergevel een vijfzijdige erker over twee bouwlagen met een plat dak met hierop een bakstenen balustrade. De vensters in de eerste bouwlaag van de erker hebben segmentboogvormige vulstukken. In de eerste bouwlaag een smalle hoge deur. De vensters in de tweede bouwlaag hebben rondboogvormige bovenlichten. Het geveldeel links van de erker wordt bekroond met een torenopbouw met een tentdak met leien. De ingesnoerde kap wordt gedragen door houten consoles. In de torenopbouw smalle hoge vensters en op het dak een rechthoekige houten deur. In het geveldeel rechts van de erker in de eerste bouwlaag twee vensters met rondboogvormige vulstukken. In de tweede bouwlaag een rechthoekig venster. Op het platte dak een smeedijzeren hek.
In het middendeel van de linkerzijgevel een uitbouw in anderhalve bouwlaag waarin zich de vml. dienstingang bevind. Deze uitbouw heeft een plat dak met hierop een hekwerk. In de linkerzijgevel van de uitbouw een rechthoekige houten deur onder een houten luifel. In de linkerzijgevel van het hoofdvolume in de eerste en tweede bouwlaag enkele blinde vensters.
Van het INTERIEUR is onder meer het volgende van belang. Aan de linkerzijde van hal op de begane grond de grote eetkamer met authentieke parketvloer; houten lambrisering en haardomlijsting; plafond met houten cassettes; rijk geornamenteerde houten deuromlijstingen. Aan het einde van de hal in de erker een werkkamer met authentieke dubbele houten deuren met hierin panelen in melkglas voorzien van een decoratief motief. In het souterrain de vml. keuken met plavuizenvloer; keukenwanden met authentieke blauwe betegeling; authentieke keukenschouw.
Waardering
De VILLA Spagnum is van architectuurhistorische waarde als redelijk gaaf en goed voorbeeld van een rijk uitgevoerde villa uit het begin van de twintigste eeuw, gebouwd in traditionalistische stijl met invloeden uit de chaletstijl in de topgevels. Het pand valt op vanwege esthetische kwaliteiten in het ontwerp en door de toegepaste stijlelementen. Het deels goed bewaard gebleven interieur onderstreept de monumentale waarde van het pand en kenmerkt zich onder meer door een ruim opgezette en fraai gedecoreerde eetkamer.
De villa heeft situeringswaarde als karakteristiek onderdeel van het berschermd gezicht Griendtsveen waarbinnen de villa een beeldbepalende rol speelt.
De villa heeft cultuurhistorische waarde en vertegenwoordigt algemeen belang als bijzondere uiting van een sociaal-economische en industriële ontwikkeling, als rijk uitgevoerde fabrikantenwoning herinnert de villa aan de hier aanwezige en bloeiende turfstrooiselindustrie.

Rear facade with varied composition. Against the middle section of the rear facade a five-sided bay window over two storeys with a flat roof with a brick balustrade on it. The windows in the first storey of the bay window have segmental arched filler pieces. In the first storey a narrow tall door. The windows in the second storey have arched fanlights. The facade section to the left of the bay window is crowned with a tower structure with a hipped roof with slates. The pinched roof truss is supported by wooden consoles. In the tower structure narrow tall windows and on the roof a rectangular wooden door. In the facade section to the right of the bay window in the first storey two windows with arched filler pieces. In the second storey a rectangular window. On the flat roof a wrought-iron fence.
In the middle section of the left side facade an extension in one-and-a-half storeys in which the former service entrance is located. This extension has a flat roof with fencing on it. In the left side facade of the extension a rectangular wooden door under a wooden canopy. In the left side facade of the main volume in the first and second storey some blind windows.
Of the INTERIOR the following is noteworthy. On the left side of the hall on the ground floor the large dining room with authentic parquet floor; wooden wainscoting and fireplace surround; ceiling with wooden cassettes; richly ornamented wooden door surrounds. At the end of the hall in the bay window a study with authentic double wooden doors with panels in frosted glass featuring a decorative motif. In the basement the former kitchen with tile floor; kitchen walls with authentic blue tilework; authentic kitchen hood.
Valuation
The VILLA Spagnum is of architectural-historical value as a reasonably well-preserved and good example of a richly executed villa from the early twentieth century, built in traditionalist style with influences from chalet style in the stepped gables. The building stands out due to aesthetic qualities in the design and through the applied stylistic elements. The partly well-preserved interior underscores the monumental value of the building and is characterized among other things by a spaciously laid out and finely decorated dining room.
The villa has situational value as a characteristic component of the protected townscape Griendtsveen within which the villa plays a defining role in the townscape.
