Inleiding

Description
Introduction
The Roman Catholic CHURCH St. Egbert in Schiermonnikoog is a small cross church on the west side of the Badweg, which runs in a north-westerly direction from the village of Schiermonnikoog. The church stands on a deep plot, somewhat set back as is generally the case along the Badweg, with the entrance porch oriented towards the road. The Sint Egbert Church was built in 1915 in Rationalist style; next to it, in 1922, the holiday house of the same name was established. The design is by Groningen architect A.Th. van Elmpt. The church is still in use and has not been altered or has been scarcely altered. The interior and interior components are likewise virtually original or restored to their original condition. The original BELL CLOCK is still present; no further data on this are available. Some additions have been placed on the plot: in 1991 a detached dwelling was built behind the church with a fence connected to the church and a wooden shed built onto the apse. These additions fall outside the scope of national monument protection, as does the fence along the road.
Description
The Sint Egbert Church is built on a cross-shaped floor plan in red brick and is covered by two intersecting gabled roofs, laid with red flat Mulden tiles. At the intersection of the roofs stands a wooden roof turret with weather vane, on an understructure covered with slates and containing a bell. Against the gable ends, tight wind vanes on wooden blocks. An apse is located at the rear; a semi-open entrance porch under a gabled roof at the front. A pentagonal sacristy under a flat roof with guttering and blocks is built onto the left side, in the corner between the transept and apse. Simple decorative brickwork accentuates the facades: the plinth has darker joints, the gable ends contain weavings, cross-shaped recesses and brick mosaic. The front facade is partly cut across by the entrance porch, and contains two round-arched windows and a rectangular window in the gable end. The side facades are rhythmicized by groups of three round-arched windows between lisenes that thicken downward.
From the window group in each arm of the cross, the higher central window has stained glass decoration within a trefoil shape: on the right a dove (symbol of the Holy Ghost) and on the left a wine chalice (symbol of the blood of Christ). The pentagonal apse has three round-arched windows, two of which are blind. The sacristy contains a wooden door on the street side and on the left side a rectangular window. All windows of the church and sacristy have stained glass, a stretcher and a drip sill in purple brick. Single-thickness round arches surround the round-arched windows. The gable end of the entrance porch has vertical boarding and at the roof ridge a wooden Celtic cross. The porch is supported by square wooden columns, a natural stone block and a bricked breastwork, and has a two-stepped staircase with sloping side wall. The front door in the porch has simple cast-iron decorative fittings; in the side walls of the porch two rectangular windows.
The INTERIOR is virtually entirely original. The ceilings of the nave and apse are each separately boarded and separated by a plastered round arch, creating a dome shape in the apse. The wooden roof trusses with arch-shaped studs are partly visible in the nave and in the transepts. The whole rests on wooden consoles in the side walls. The ribs and edges of the ceiling boarding are emphasized by painting. The aisle of the nave is laid with black-red floor tiles, the slightly raised floor directly in front of and in the apse with black-yellow tiles in honeycomb pattern. The walls are decorated with wooden wainscoting and above it a yellow painted fair-faced brickwork, which is finished with a moulding. Above the moulding, up to the roof, white plasterwork is applied with windows. Above the entrance is the choir loft with open wooden balustrade. The church contains the original church furnishings, including carved wooden church pews in the nave, a confessional with stained glass panes and decorative fittings directly to the left of the entrance, a marble altar in the apse, decorated with incised and gilded floral motifs, and copper modernized canopies.
