Inleiding
De RECREATIEWONING Opduin staat in het duingebied oostelijk van de Badweg, die van het dorp Schiermonnikoog in noordwestelijke richting loopt. 'Opduin' is georiënteerd naar het noorden en ligt enkele tientallen meters terug van de Badweg. Het huis is in 1913 gebouwd in opdracht van de familie Onnes (wijnhandelaren te Groningen) op een andere locatie: namelijk aan de strandboulevard die rond 1911 dwars op de Badweg was aangelegd. Door een onvoorzien oprukkende vloedlijn kalfden de duinen echter snel af en werd de boulevardbebouwing bedreigd. Twee huizen, Opduin en Anagber, werden tijdig afgebroken en op een veiliger plaats herbouwd. Met 'Opduin' is dit naar verluidt tweemaal gebeurd: in 1917 en in 1922. De strandboulevard is in zee verdwenen. Het ontwerp van 'Opduin' is niet van een uitgesproken stijl: het bevat -vooral inwendig- elementen van de Overgangsstijl. In 1922 is op de verdieping een tussenkamer geconstrueerd. De raamluiken zijn verwijderd, evenals de roedeverdeling in de bovenlichten van vrijwel alle ramen. Een niet-contemporain hek aan de straatzijde valt buiten de bescherming van rijkswege.
Omschrijving
De recreatiewoning Opduin is vrijwel kubusvormig, in twee bouwlagen. De gevels hebben een onderbouw in rode baksteen, met een rollaag als bovenrand en een geruwd gepleisterde bovenbouw vanaf de wisseldorpel van de benedenramen. Alle vensters staan onder een strek in rode baksteen en hebben een onderdorpel in donkerrode baksteen. Tentdak met rode Hollandse pannen; op de nokhoek een gepleisterde schoorsteen; een zinken goot met klossen onder een ruim overstek. Aan de zuidzijde is een afdak onder lessenaarsdak aangebouwd. De voorgevel is op beide bouwlagen opengewerkt: beneden door een loggia met drie lichtgetoogde openingen, en daarboven door een centraal, inpandig balkon. De pijlers van de loggia en de muurvlakken daarboven zijn gepleisterd. De middelste opening van de loggia vormt de toegang, via een zich verbredende bakstenen trap met natuurstenen blokken op de hoeken. De borstwering van loggia en balkon bevatten kruisvormige uitsparingen als decoratie. De inpandige gevel van de loggia bevat oostelijk een dubbele tweeruitsdeur met bovenlichten en tienruits zijlichten in geel glas; daarnaast een H-venster. Op de verdieping aan weerszijden van het inpandige balkon een dubbel venster; inpandig bevat het balkon twee vierruitsdeuren met bovenlicht in geel glas, en een smal venster. Aan de rechterzijgevel is tussen de bouwlagen de naam Opduin in van elkaar losstaande metalen letters bevestigd. In deze gevel bevinden zich twee H-vensters en twee dubbele verdiepingsvensters. De linkerzijgevel is vrijwel identiek, op het zuidelijke benedenvenster na, dat iets korter is. De zuidelijke achtergevel wordt op de eerste bouwlaag geheel oversneden door het afdak. Onder het afdak bevindt zich een drieruitsdeur met drie-ruits bovenlicht in geel glas, waarvoor een trapje met kunststenen hoekblokken. Naast de deur een dubbel kelderraam. Direct boven de aanbouw is in het midden een klein venster; centraal op de verdieping een T-venster met een achtruits bovenlicht in geel glas. Het halfopen afdak aan de achterzijde bevat aan de oostzijde een schuur met twee deuren; aan de westzijde een gemetselde borstwering met daarop een schuin aflopend vierruitsvenster.
Het INTERIEUR is vrijwel origineel, waarbij vooral de woonkamer die aan de noordzijde de gehele breedte van het huis beslaat, opvalt. Het houtwerk in het interieur is origineel, met smalle cannelures en afgesneden hoekjes, contrasterend geschilderd. Hiermee zijn onder andere de trap, deuren en de balklaag in de woonkamer uitgevoerd, evenals een kast in de woonkamer. De keuken en het toilet hebben decoratieve keramieken vloertegels.
Waardering
De in 1913 gebouwde recreatiewoning Opduin te Schiermonnikoog is van algemeen cultuurhistorisch en architectuurhistorisch belang:
- als bijzondere uitdrukking van het zich ontwikkelende toerisme in de eerste helft van deze eeuw;
- vanwege de relatie met de historie rondom de duinafslag in deze omgeving;

The RECREATIONAL HOUSE Opduin is situated in the dune area east of the Badweg, which runs from the village of Schiermonnikoog in a north-westerly direction. 'Opduin' is oriented towards the north and stands several tens of metres back from the Badweg. The house was built in 1913 on commission of the Onnes family (wine merchants in Groningen) at a different location: namely at the beach boulevard which had been laid out around 1911 transversely to the Badweg. However, due to an unforeseen encroaching flood line the dunes eroded rapidly and the boulevard buildings were threatened. Two houses, Opduin and Anagber, were demolished in time and rebuilt in a safer location. With 'Opduin' this allegedly happened twice: in 1917 and in 1922. The recreational house Opduin is almost cubic in form, in two storeys. The facades have a substructure in red brickwork, with a roll-moulding as the upper edge and a roughcast-finished superstructure from the plinth course of the ground-floor windows. All windows are set beneath a brick string course and have an apron sill in dark-red brickwork. Hipped roof with red Dutch tiles; at the roof ridge corner a rendered chimney; a zinc gutter with brackets beneath a generous overhang. A lean-to shed under a half-hipped roof is adjoined at the south side. The front facade is open-worked on both storeys: below by a loggia with three lightly arched openings, and above by a centrally inset balcony. The pillars of the loggia and the wall surfaces above are rendered. The central opening of the loggia forms the entrance, via a widening brick staircase with natural stone blocks at the corners. The parapets of loggia and balcony contain cross-shaped recesses as decoration. The inset facade of the loggia contains to the east a double two-pane door with fanlights and ten-pane side lights in yellow glass; beside it an H-window. On the upper floor on either side of the inset balcony a double window; inset the balcony contains two four-pane doors with fanlight in yellow glass, and a narrow window. On the right side facade between the storeys the name Opduin is affixed in separate metal letters. In this facade are two H-windows and two double upper-floor windows. The left side facade is virtually identical, except for the southern ground-floor window, which is slightly shorter. The southern rear facade is entirely cut across by the lean-to on the first storey. Beneath the lean-to is a three-pane door with three-pane fanlight in yellow glass, in front of which a small flight of steps with artificial stone corner blocks. Next to the door a double cellar window. Directly above the extension in the centre is a small window; centrally on the upper floor a T-window with an eight-pane fanlight in yellow glass. The semi-open lean-to at the rear contains on the east side a shed with two doors; on the west side a brick parapet with a sloping four-pane window upon it.
The INTERIOR is virtually original, with the sitting room particularly notable, which occupies the entire width of the house on the north side. The woodwork in the interior is original, with narrow flutes and cut corners, painted in contrasting colours. With this are executed inter alia the staircase, doors and the beam layer in the sitting room, as well as a cupboard in the sitting room. The kitchen and the toilet have decorative ceramic floor tiles.
Valuation
The recreational house Opduin built in 1913 in Schiermonnikoog is of general cultural-historical and architectural-historical significance:
- as a particular expression of the developing tourism in the first half of this century;
- on account of the relationship with the history surrounding dune erosion in this area;
- on account of the coherence in design between exterior and interior;
- on account of the reasonably high degree of architectural integrity of the exterior;
- on account of the very high degree of integrity of the interior;
- on account of the high quality of the visual relationship of the object with the surrounding landscape of dunes and sea.
