Inleiding
Waardering

- vanwege de hoge mate van architectonische gaafheid van het exterieur;
- vanwege het bijzondere materiaalgebruik en de hoge mate van zeldzaamheid daarvan;
- vanwege de toegepaste bouwstijl waarin elementen van de Art Nouveau zijn toegepast;

Description
Introduction
The RECREATION DWELLING Enno in Schiermonnikoog stands on the west side of the Badweg which has been developed since the beginning of this century, when tourism began to develop here. The Badweg runs from the village in a north-westerly direction. The dwelling is oriented towards the road and lies somewhat set back on a deep plot. 'Enno' is one of the dwellings of asbestos cement sheets, which were built in 1917 at the commission of Mr. Timmer, owner of the Timmer Steam Carpentry Factory in Groningen, for a number of family members. Enno was a son of Timmer; there were also, among others, 'Margaretha' and 'Jacoba'. The design was probably by Timmer himself. The Art Nouveau elements, which prevail especially in the interior, are probably due to the execution of the construction by Belgian refugees (World War I) who stayed on the island. 'ENNO' is the sole survivor of the series of family dwellings. Originally the plot was deeper and contained a tea house set back on the land. Alterations date from shortly after construction: the openings in the veranda at the front were closed with windows in 1918, and a rear extension was placed in approximately 1927 in the same style.
Description
The recreation dwelling has a rectangular floor plan and is built in one storey in whitewashed asbestos cement sheets on a concrete plinth. The gabled roof is covered with black flat Frisian tiles and has tight wind vanes and wooden consoles. The rear extension has a lean-to roof. The upper part of the facades, directly above the windows to the gutter, projects slightly, causing the roof section to visually separate somewhat from the base structure. The enclosed veranda at the front distinguishes itself by its own window form. The front facade is symmetrically arranged: rectangular pilasters on either side of the slightly arched front door run through to the roof edge. The name Enno is painted between them. On either side of the front door a slightly arched tripartite window with six-pane fanlights. The curved side walls of the wooden staircase in front of the front door end against square columns with a cap. The side facades are identical: they each contain four windows, evenly distributed across the facade, of which the front one is identical to the windows in the front facade; further T-windows with double nine-pane fanlights and shutters. Directly above the windows runs a wide projecting wooden moulding; below it a continuous wooden drip sill. In the rear extension there are several two-lights; on the left side the extension is partly open; within this canopy two doors.
The INTERIOR contains many original valuable elements, including wooden wainscoting over the entire wall, the upper part of which is painted using stencil techniques in various geometric and organic patterns. Particularly in the living room this remains entirely undamaged. Also present here is a fireplace mantel with Art Nouveau wood carving, with motifs of birds, lion heads and flower calyxes.
Valuation
The recreation dwelling Enno in Schiermonnikoog, built in 1917, is of general cultural-historical and architectural-historical importance:
- as a distinctive expression of developing tourism at the beginning of this century;
- because of the high degree of architectural integrity of the exterior;
- because of the special material use and the high degree of rarity thereof;
- because of the building style applied in which elements of Art Nouveau are incorporated;
- because of the very high degree of integrity and quality of the internal structure and detailing of the interior components.
