Inleiding
De RECREATIEWONING De Horst te Schiermonnikoog is gelegen in de duinen, aan een oost-west gelegen pad dat loopt vanaf de Badweg naar de vuurtoren van Schiermonnikoog. Dit duingebied is in de twintiger en dertiger jaren van deze eeuw bebouwd met recreatiewoningen. In die periode was Schiermonnikoog in particulier bezit van de Duitse graaf H. von Bernstorff Wehningen, die voor dit gebied onder andere bepaalde dat te bouwen huizen rieten daken moesten hebben, en zo een vorm van particulier welstandstoezicht uitoefende. 'De Horst' is georiënteerd naar het Vuurtorenpad, staat als het ware met het duin in de rug en voegt zich met haar organische vormen in het landschap. De woning is in 1936 of 1937 gebouwd naar ontwerp van de architect P. Venstra, die ook op Ameland vergelijkbare woningen op zijn naam heeft staan. Het ontwerp bezit elementen van de Engelse Landhuisstijl. De woning is intern gemoderniseerd, binnen de nog oorspronkelijke plattegrond. Een glazen windscherm vóór de veranda, en één op de wanden ervan zijn van later datum en vallen buiten de bescherming van rijkswege.
Omschrijving
De recreatiewoning De Horst heeft een asymmetrische plattegrond, die met name aan de voorzijde wordt gedomineerd door een grote en een kleine cirkelvorm, die gescheiden van elkaar blijven door een tussenliggend langwerpig volume. De kleine cirkelvorm gaat aan de rechterzijde over in een rechthoekige vorm. De woning is opgetrokken uit gepotdekselde, geteerde planken in één bouwlaag met vliering, onder rondgaand tentdak. Een dakkapel aan de oostzijde is zo groot dat een uitbouw ontstaat. Het dakschild van de hoofdvorm loopt hier zeer laag door, waarbij de gevel enigszins verzonken in het duin staat. Het rieten dak is afgewerkt met oranje rietvorsten op de top, de nok en onder het dakkapelvenster. De asymmetrische voorgevel wordt overheerst door doorlopende zesruits vensterpartijen aan weerszijden van een iets teruggelegen zesruits rondboogdeur. De linker vensterpartij loopt rondom door tot in de achtergevel; de rechter eindigt in een blinde rechte wand. Een veranda met gepotdekselde wanden en glazen windscherm bevindt zich voor de ingang. Twee houten bloembakken zijn eraan bevestigd, waarin de eerder genoemde cirkelvormen terugkeren.
Laag in de rechter zijgevel een grote rietgedekte dakkapel, met drie vierkante vierruitsvensters en oranje vorsttegels als lekdorpel. Onder de dakkapel een kelderluik. De achtergevel wordt gevormd door de uitloop van de grote rondlopende vorm aan de linkervoorzijde en een met een lichte knik daarop aansluitend recht deel. Aan het eind van de ronding bevindt zich een houten deur met dubbel gestapeld bovenlicht en drieruits zijlichten. Aan weerszijden van de genoemde knik twee vierruitsvensters.
De PLATTEGROND van het verder gemoderniseerde interieur is origineel, met in de grote cirkelvorm de woonkamer en de keuken; aan de rechterzijde twee slaapvertrekken; centraal een gang die het huis doorsnijdt met aan elk uiteinde een buitendeur.
Waardering
De in 1936/1937 gebouwde recreatiewoning De Horst te Schiermonnikoog is van algemeen cultuurhistorisch en architectuurhistorisch belang:
- als bijzondere uitdrukking van het zich ontwikkelende toerisme in de eerste helft van deze eeuw;
- vanwege de toegepaste bouwstijl, met elementen van de Engelse Landhuisstijl, op kleine schaal uitgevoerd;
- vanwege de hoogwaardige esthetische kwaliteit van het ontwerp;
- vanwege de zeer hoge mate van architectonische gaafheid van het exterieur;

The RECREATIONAL HOUSE De Horst in Schiermonnikoog is situated in the dunes, at an east-west running path that leads from the Badweg to the lighthouse of Schiermonnikoog. This dune area was built up in the twenties and thirties of this century with recreational houses. In that period Schiermonnikoog was in private ownership of the German Count H. von Bernstorff Wehningen, who for this area determined inter alia that houses built were to have thatched roofs, and thus exercised a form of private aesthetic control. 'De Horst' is oriented towards the Lighthouse Path, stands as it were with the dune at its back and fits in with its organic forms into the landscape. The house was built in 1936 or 1937 according to a design by architect P. Venstra, who also has comparable houses to his name on Ameland. The design possesses elements of the English Country House style. The house has been modernised internally, within the still original floor plan. Description
The recreational house De Horst has an asymmetrical floor plan, which is particularly dominated at the front by a large and a small circular form, which remain separated from each other by an intervening elongated volume. The small circular form transitions on the right side into a rectangular form. The house is built from roughcast, tarred boards in one storey with upper chamber, beneath a continuous hipped roof. A roof dormer on the east side is so large that an extension is created. The roof slope of the main form runs very low here, whereby the facade is somewhat sunken into the dune. The thatched roof is finished with orange reed ridge tiles on the top, the ridge and beneath the dormer window. The asymmetrical front facade is dominated by continuous six-pane window sets on either side of a slightly recessed six-pane round-arched door. The left window set runs around through into the rear facade; the right ends in a blind straight wall. A veranda with roughcast walls and glazed wind screen is located in front of the entrance. Two wooden window boxes are attached to it, in which the aforementioned circular forms recur.
Low in the right side facade a large thatch-covered roof dormer, with three square four-pane windows and orange ridge tiles as the drip moulding. Beneath the dormer a cellar hatch. The rear facade is formed by the continuation of the large circular form running around on the left front and a straight section connecting to it with a slight kink. At the end of the rounding there is a wooden door with double stacked fanlight and three-pane side lights. On either side of the aforementioned kink two four-pane windows.
The FLOOR PLAN of the further modernised interior is original, with the sitting room and kitchen in the large circular form; on the right side two bedrooms; centrally a corridor which runs through the house with an external door at each end.
Valuation
The recreational house De Horst built in 1936/1937 in Schiermonnikoog is of general cultural-historical and architectural-historical significance:
- as a particular expression of the developing tourism in the first half of this century;
- on account of the applied building style, with elements of the English Country House style, executed on a small scale;
- on account of the high-grade aesthetic quality of the design;
- on account of the very high degree of architectural integrity of the exterior;
- on account of the very high quality of the visual relationship of the object with the dune landscape;
- on account of the significance for the oeuvre of the architect.
