Omschrijving

Description

Main building, country house De Heest. The partly cellared house has an L-shaped floor plan mostly of one storey and an L-shaped gabled roof (suppressed Old Dutch tiles) with three-sided closure above the western end of the south façade and a hipped roof above the northern end of the north façade. The façades are largely built in late 17th, early 18th century brick. However, the two-storey section of the north wing on the square side and a large part of the northern side of the south wing are built in late medieval format brick. The stepped gables were executed in 1908 in lime-sand brick; at that time the window divisions in a romantic style were also installed. The outer corner of the L was rebuilt after WWII due to war damage. The stepped gables are situated at the head of the long façades and at regular intervals on the long south façade. The roof is covered with tiles, the roof plane of the southwest stepped gable is covered with slates. The building still shows traces of the past. In the western long façade are still the openings where stable doors have been. After the construction of the coach house, multi-pane windows were placed here. In the façades there are various types of multi-pane windows with venetian blinds. The various types of brickwork, brick and lime-sand brick make the house a striking combination of older and younger architecture. From the interior can be mentioned the well-preserved structure with a long corridor in the south wing, rooms with stucco ceilings, garlands and stucco mouldings, an original 18th century kitchen with fireplace and tiling. Furthermore the house possesses inter alia rooms with old timber beam ceilings, historic roof truss structures, several fireplaces, marble floors and decorative mouldings with meander motif. In the south wing there is a special timber construction with anchor beam bracing.

Valuation

The main building is of general importance due to architectural-historical values (good and well-preserved example of a building with development from the 16th century to 1908, distinctive stylistic elements from the Romantic period, distinctive interior elements such as stucco mouldings, fireplaces, well-preserved structure; furthermore the building marks through the restoration in 1907-1908 an important development phase within Dutch architecture, in which a reorientation took place on the building styles and traditions of the past, a development which ultimately for example the ideological content of country house and villa construction in the first quarter of the 20th century was of great importance), due to urban planning values (significance in landscape, architectural style in relation to landscape) and cultural-historical and rarity values: of the old manor houses in eastern Netherlands De Heest belongs to the few examples which have still entirely retained their old structure and scope and thereby preserve memories of the function which the building fulfilled for many years (farm with manor room, etc.).
