Inleiding

Introduction

In 1936 realised PREFILTER BUILDING WITH CLEAN WATER CELLAR II, built in a horizontal style which can be considered a taut variant of the Amsterdam School. The designer is as yet unknown. This object was built at the time to replace the late nineteenth-century iron removal building, which thereafter until its demolition in 1968 was used as a warehouse. The prefilter building standing on a raised platform is connected to the rectangular clean water cellar to the west of it. This cellar has an east-west main direction which in the middle of the north side is accessible via a detached entrance section.

Description

The symmetrically arranged prefilter building stands on a rectangular ground plan with the short side (front) facing the works yard. The building forms a stepped volume consisting of a lower and a higher part with in the middle of the front a square water tower incorporated into the building volume, which also contains the main entrance. This main entrance is reached via a flight of eight steps flanked by two decorative concrete balls. The higher part of the building volume is set far back in relation to the first storey and in relation to the tower and, like these elements, is covered with flat projecting roofs. The building has a concrete skeleton. The masonry is executed in yellow brick. The windows are all executed in bronze and provided with glazing bars. The doors are clad in bronze on the outside. The sills beneath the windows are executed in red weathered sill tiles and the windowsills have blue-glazed square tiles of large format (20x20cm). The prefilter installation consists amongst other things of a number of reinforced concrete tanks which together form a rectangular mass in the middle of the building. The installation can be entered on the ground floor via a circulation space which is lit via large windows around the building. The space above the filter tanks, accessible via internal stairs, is lit by a series of windows in the higher, set-back volume.

The clean water cellar II manifests itself as a rectangular raised section on the yard on which low square ventilation pipes in red brick are located and which is accessible via a small and low square building under a hipped roof with shallow pitch and mastic covering. The building in fact covers a reinforced concrete and tiled flight of stairs leading down to the cellar. The masonry of the small building is laid in red brick and on four sides provided with horizontal steel windows with square glazing bars. The overhung entrance is located on the north side and consists of double wooden doors with in each door a vertical strip of six panes. Because the small building stands partly in the raised slope above the clean water cellar, the entrance at ground level is flanked by obliquely laid retaining walls flanked by two decorative concrete balls.

Assessment

The prefilter building with clean water cellar II is of general importance as a historical-functional component of the water supply complex.
