Inleiding
HERDENKINGSMONUMENT met neo-classicistische detaillering dat in 1874 door de burgers van Enschede is aangeboden als dankbetuiging aan H.J. van Heek voor de aanleg van het Volkspark in Enschede. Het park is in 1874 aangelegd naar een ontwerp van D. Wattez maar in de loop der jaren zo sterk gewijzigd dat het voor bescherming op rijksniveau niet in aanmerking komt. Datzelfde geldt voor de diverse opstallen in het park, behalve het herdenkingsmonument dat in de noordoosthoek van het park staat dichtbij de grote vijverpartij.
Omschrijving
Het gebeeldhouwde zandstenen gedenkteken bestaat uit een sokkel in de vorm van een driepas op een hardstenen basement, een driezijdige pijler en een zuil met een zittende leeuw met wapenschild. De overhoekse pilasters van de driezijdige pijler zijn gecanneleerd en voorzien van fantasiekapitelen. Op de cartouches van de schacht is de tekst: "Ter nagedachtenis aan den Stichter van het Volkspark", "den heer Hendrik Jan van Heek uit dankbaarheid gewijd", "door de ingezetenen van Enschede en Lonneker 1 mei 1874". De pijler wordt afgesloten door een eierlijst en hoofdgestel met overstekende geprofileerde kroonlijst. De zuil op de pijler heeft een met guirlandes versierd basement, een gecanneleerde schacht en een fantasiekapiteel. Aan de voet van het basement banderols met de opschriften "Onderwijs", "Beschaving" en "Volkswelvaart".

MEMORIAL MONUMENT with neo-classical detailing that in 1874 was presented by the citizens of Enschede as an expression of gratitude to H.J. van Heek for the creation of the Volkspark in Enschede. The park was laid out in 1874 according to a design by D. Wattez but over the years has been so greatly altered that it does not qualify for protection at national level. The same applies to the various structures in the park, except for the memorial monument which stands in the northeastern corner of the park close to the large pond.
Description
The sculpted sandstone memorial consists of a plinth in the form of a trefoil on a hard stone base, a three-sided pillar and a column with a seated lion with shield. The diagonal pilasters of the three-sided pillar are fluted and provided with fantasy capitals. On the cartouches of the shaft is the text: "In remembrance of the founder of the Volkspark", "the gentleman Hendrik Jan van Heek dedicated out of gratitude", "by the inhabitants of Enschede and Lonneker 1 May 1874". The pillar is finished by an egg-and-dart moulding and capital with overhanging moulded cornice. The column on the pillar has a basement decorated with garlands, a fluted shaft and a fantasy capital. At the foot of the base banderols with the inscriptions "Education", "Civilisation" and "Public Welfare".
