Inleiding

Introduction

The SYNAGOGUE, together with the former Jewish SCHOOL and two DWELLINGS in one building volume, was built in 1927-1928 on behalf of the Dutch Israelite Community in Enschede with financial support from textile manufacturer S.N. Menko. The building shows the influence of the Oriental style that was in fashion for synagogue construction from 1850 onwards. The design by architects A.P. Smits and C. van de Linde from Aerdenhout is based on a plan by K.P.C. de Bazel from 1918 for a synagogue on the Stadsgravenstraat in the city centre. De Bazel's design was adopted almost literally and was extended with a Jewish school with a teacher's dwelling and a rabbi's house. Contractors J.H. Thomasson and W.A. Thomasson from Enschede carried out the work. The layout of the property is virtually unchanged, the interior of the school, the festive hall and the dwellings have been modernised but still contain original components such as tiled floors, built-in cupboards etc. A toddler playroom is housed in the former Jewish school, and both dwellings are rented to third parties. The synagogue stands in the villa district De Stadsmaten, the former city meadow, for which an expansion plan was made in 1907. For the dwellings along the Prinsestraat a masonry boundary wall with wrought-iron fence.

Description

Large composite building volume with on either side of the centrally located synagogue, the school and schoolmaster's dwelling (S) and the rabbi's dwelling (N). The building faces the street with its front facade (E). The facades are constructed above a plinth of large Utrecht bricks in yellow-grey wallbricks. The meandering decorative brickwork above windows, doors and below the roof edges is executed in dark brown brick. The sills of the windows and the coping stones along the roof edges are made from basalt lava. The tall PRAYER ROOM on a square plan beneath a twelve-sided roof cupola clad with copper forms the centre of the building. The facades of the prayer room are three bays wide with three windows in each bay. The constructed angle quoins of the central bays extending into the roof skin are crowned by natural stone pomegranates. Against the north facade the extension with the women's gallery. The main entrance to the synagogue is located in a low portico under a flat roof against the east facade (E) of the prayer room. A flight of six steps leads to the porch with double panelled door at the level of the plinth. The portico is flanked by the projecting vestry (left) and small synagogue (right) with rounded corners under copper cupolas. On either side of these rooms the side entrances (left for men and right for women) with double panelled doors in porticos with rounded arch and barrel vault. The round-headed windows with fanlight on the ground floor and above in the prayer room are fitted with coloured stained-glass windows, as are the rose windows in the cupola. The rear facade (W) of the prayer room has two exits with double panelled doors. The composite window arrangements in the rear facade are fitted with stained-glass windows.

The SCHOOL ANNEX DWELLING on the south side of the synagogue has two storeys under a flat roof. The building volume consists of irregularly arranged block-shaped components of varying height. The entrance to the school is located in the front facade (E) in a projecting porch with rounded arches beneath a small tower with clock and cupola roof. The composite window frames consist each of three windows with fanlight. In the recessed part of the left side facade (S) a porch with the entrance to the dwelling. Further in this facade the composite windows of the two-class school on the ground floor and the festive hall on the upper floor. Against the rear facade (W) a masonry external staircase leads to a double panelled door on the upper floor. The remaining windows in this wing are simply round-headed. The RABBI'S DWELLING on the north side of the synagogue is composed of block-shaped flat-roofed components of respectively one, two and three storeys. The entrance to the house is located in a porch under rounded arch in the front facade (E). To the right of the entrance in the section of two storeys windows with composite frame.

The large prayer room is in completely original condition with among other things the centrally placed wooden bimah, the wooden ark in the south wall and the wooden benches. The walls and vault of the synagogue are executed in rough blue plaster. In the cupola vault are depicted the symbols of the twelve tribes of Israel. In the small synagogue and the vestry the original wall panelling and furniture are still present.

Special attention is deserved by the original light fittings throughout the building. The corridor and the entrance porch of the synagogue have a white marble floor and corresponding wall panelling with black marble bands and coping stones. The walls of the cloakrooms, stairwells and toilet groups are provided with tile wall panelling. In the roof lights above the hallways behind the side entrances stained-glass windows.
