Inleiding

Introduction

Detached TOWN HOUSE from 1921, designed by the architect A. Beltman (Enschede) on behalf of Karel Willem Ledeboer. The house was built after the model of a contemporary variant of an eighteenth-century English "Georgian" country house. The Beltman office (three generations) built between 1870 and 1940 for various Twente manufacturers residential houses and office and factory buildings. Because the taste and wishes of the client determined the design, in particular the residential housing oeuvre of the office shows a diversity of architectural styles. The early work is largely eclectic, after 1900 the representative and monumental classical vocabulary is mostly applied. Striking is the influence of the English country house and cottage style which is connected with the strong orientation of the Twente manufacturers to the English textile industry. The house stands with its front facade (E) on the Kortenaerstraat in the villa district De Stadsmaten (1907). Of the original boundary wall two wooden access gates remain between wooden gate piers with cast-iron urn finials. The outbuildings which have been attached to the rear facade in connection with the new function of architects' office fall outside the protection. The extension district De Stadsmaten was laid out in 1907 on the site of the old municipal meadow and in the years thereafter largely built up with town houses of mainly textile manufacturers. Although the urban structure of the district has been damaged, on prominent locations in the district several of these residential houses have been preserved.

Description

Building on rectangular ground plan erected over two storeys in brown brickwork under a complex truncated hipped roof with red Dutch tiles. The gutter line rests on brackets. The cross windows with moulded sandstone drip mouldings and the double glass doors are executed with small glazing bars. The symmetrical front facade (E) has seven window bays, of which the two outer ones are in corner projections. In the middle window bay the door with four-pane fanlight is flanked by fluted half-columns with simple capitals. Above the door a canopy in the form of a bent round arch with shell decoration on carved corbels. The south gable has three window bays with in the middle ground floor a double glass door and to its left a large brick three-sided bay window section over two storeys. The rear door in the middle of the seven window bays of the rear facade (W) is concealed behind the new building. Above this entrance the windows of the stairwell. In the flat-roofed low extension against the blank north gable the original service entrance. On the roof three large characteristic English chimneys with decoratively laid flues positioned diagonally. The three roof dormers in the roof slope on the rear are crowned with three-sided and segmental arch-shaped pediments.

Interior with original hall and stairwell. The room with the bay window on the ground floor has walls decorated with pilasters, cassettes and cornices. In the kitchen part of the original display cabinets and the tile floors have been preserved. On the ground floor two worked wooden fireplaces and on the first floor two fireplaces with glazed tiles.

Valuation

Town house of cultural-historical, architectural-historical and urban planning significance because of:

- the original function as a city villa of the manufacturer Karel Willem Ledeboer

- the sober English "Georgian" country house-inspired architectural style, which is exemplary of the working method of the Beltman office which is determined by the wishes and taste of the clients

- the external integrity

- the well-preserved original interior components

- the distinctive situation in the villa district De Stadsmaten (1907)
