Inleiding

Introduction

In 1909 the Textielschool was established as an educational institution from the Nederlandse School voor Nijverheid en Handel, followed in 1918 by the Hogere Textielschool. The Hogere Textielschool "De Maere" was built in 1922 by the Dienst Gemeentewerken Enschede, designed by architect W.K. de Wijs, and taken into use on 12 September that year. Jhr. Charles de Maere from St. Nicolaas, Flanders moved his fur-weaving business to the Netherlands after the separation of the Low Countries and played an important role in improvement and training within the textile industry.

The volume of the school is articulated in French classical style, as a central corps de logis (central risalit) with corner pavilions (corner risalits) connected by wings. The school is executed in traditionalist brick architecture. The first expansion of the school took place in 1939, when the practical rooms were extended on the east side; this part is of secondary importance for the purposes of protection.

The school was expanded in the nineteen-fifties with a building containing a boiler house along the Van Galenstraat. Also during this period the work floor was enlarged: against the rear facade of the practical building a series of rooms was placed across virtually the entire width, under a flat roof. In doing so, the original exterior doors came to function as interior doors. Around the building a brick boundary wall was erected with wrought-iron fencing between piers.

Description

The school consists of a U-shaped room building that encloses a covered work floor with practical rooms. The south wing of the U is considerably shorter than the north wing (along the Van Galenstraat).

The room building is constructed in brown brick over two storeys under a composite roof, covered with tiles.

The central risalit of the front facade (W) on the Ariënsplein is raised higher under a hipped roof. The corner risalits project only in the facade and have no accentuation in the roof plane. Centre, corner risalit and bays are crowned with roof dormers. On all ridge ends stands an open-work roof cresting. The central risalit is likewise crowned by a roof cresting which is executed somewhat more boldly. The cresting are covered with zinc. On both storeys the facade is provided with 24-pane windows. The corner pavilions have three window axes, the central risalit five. On the ground floor the entrance is located here. The access doors within the mortared spandrel are not original. Below and above the windows on the upper storey are tile friezes applied with representations from the (textile) industry.

The practical building has one storey and is covered with shed roofs with an iron truss structure that rests on three load-bearing walls: to the east the former exterior wall, to the west probably the dividing wall between practical section and main building, and in the centre the wall that, from the main entrance, forms the right side of the central corridor. A large span is thus achieved, with almost open floor plans.

The central hall, stairwell and corridors have tiled floors and are fitted with tile wainscoting and reliefs with representations from the (textile) industry. The stairwell is lit by three round-arched windows on the upper floor fitted with leaded glass and is vaulted with three herringbone cross vaults.

In the main axis of the room building lies the central corridor of the practical building. Practical spaces are grouped on either side.

Valuation

School of general cultural-historical, architectural-historical and urban-planning significance due to

- the direct relationship with the industrialization of Enschede

- the quality of the design

- the detailing of the interior

- the image-defining location on the Dr. Ariënsplein in De Stadsmaten

- the intactness of the exterior and interior
