Inleiding

Posthumus Meyjes.

Introduction

Originally built as a School for the Blind in 1910, designed by architect C.B. Posthumus Meyjes for the board of the Prins Alexanderstichting in Amsterdam. The building was intended for forty blind children who received education there. The location was deliberately chosen because of the wooded surroundings of the hamlet Huis ter Heide, where since 1901 a local railway line with a station ran along the Amersfoorstseweg. In 1999 the premises were renovated internally. A new extension was added at the rear.

Description

An INSTITUTIONAL BUILDING set parallel to the public road, freestanding, of two storeys on an asymmetrical, U-shaped ground plan, with a compound hipped roof covered with roof tiles in cross bond. The brick facades are executed in a traditional style with Dutch-classical influences. The most common window type is the sash window with a lightly arched transom above. The representative front facade is located on the east side. This facade has a strictly symmetrical layout and is eleven window axes wide. The entire front facade is finished with a profiled cornice. The layout consists of two corner risalites, each three window axes wide, provided with dressed corner pilasters in ashlar masonry. The corner pilasters have a console in the cornice that supports the roof gutter. Between the aforementioned corner pilasters is a facade five window axes wide with a monumental entrance composition placed on the central axis. The entrance composition is emphasized by dressed pilasters between which a white rendered door frame has been installed. The rendering also covers the double balcony door above the main entrance. The entrance consists of a double door with a semicircular arched glazing-bar fanlight. To the left of the entrance composition a foundation stone is laid in with the text: '19 June 1910 foundation stone laid by Carolina Maria Dudok van Heel, born 27 August 1904'. Above the main entrance a balcony on consoles has been placed, which has been given wrought-iron railings, in which the name of the building is set. The corner pillars of the balcony railing have a ball finial. In the apex of the entrance composition is a horizontal oval roof window placed with an inset diamond-shaped glazing-bar division. The cornice above the window follows the form of this window. At the bottom a festoon border is attached. In the roof slope there are six roof dormers with pediment terminations and flanking walls on the front side. On the central axis, on the ridge of the roof, a bell tower has been placed, consisting of a square base, an octagonal structure with louvres and a domed crown, on which a weathervane is set.

The side facade of the wing on the south side was originally five window axes long, but was later extended. Due to this extension the monumental veranda, which stood at the rear of the south wing, had to be moved. It is now positioned further back against the side facade. Dressed pilasters have been placed on the corners. A wooden profiled cornice finishes the facade. The extension has no cornice, but a simple roof edge.

The side wing on the north side dates from 1999 and falls outside the protection.

The rear facade borders on what was originally the playground. The facade has a projecting building volume, which originally contained the gymnasium. In the facade there are three double doors with fanlights in the first storey. In the second storey three large cross windows with glazing-bar division have been placed. The corners are decorated with pilasters. In the recessed corners on either side of the aforementioned building volume is a building volume of three storeys under a flat roof. At the intersection with the hipped roof of the main volume a tall chimney has been placed.

The interior has been adapted to a new function over the years and consequently falls outside the protection.

Valuation

The school for the blind from 1910 is of cultural-historical importance as a special expression of a specific form of education, a characteristic, early twentieth-century phenomenon on the Utrecht Heuvelrug. Of architectural-historical value as an example of a traditional building style inspired by Dutch-classical examples and because of its place in the oeuvre of architect C.B. Posthumus Meyjes.
