Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
Detached ORPHANAGE, built in 1896-1897 in an eclectic style of construction with predominantly neo-renaissance elements. The building was probably designed by Alkmaar architect K. Bakker Dzn. The original inscription in hardstone, "WEESHUIS", is still present beneath the current nameplate "HUIZE VAN STRIJEN". The orphanage is located east of the Grote Sloot and is the most southerly building of the three objects of the orphanage complex arranged in a row (orphanage, gambrel-roofed farmhouse and workers' dwelling). The orphanage preceding this was in the 18th and 19th centuries owned by the dike board of the Zijpe and Hazepolder, but in the French period (1795-1810) when the cadastre was established, it passed to a foundation. The current orphanage stands on the site of an older building. The two original staircases of the current orphanage were replaced in the 20th century by one central staircase. Through various (unprotected) extensions, both the rear gable of the orphanage and the original extension at the rear have been substantially altered. However, the extensions have not affected the appearance of the building from the side of the public road.
N.B. The extensions at the rear of the orphanage are not protected.
Description
Orphanage built on a rectangular ground plan, with a rectangular extension on one of the long sides. The property consists of two storeys under a broken hipped roof with ridge line parallel to the Grote Sloot and two zinc ridge finials at the ridge corners. The rear building has two storeys under a recessed hipped roof and ridge line perpendicular to the Grote Sloot. The roofs are covered with black Tuiles du Nord. The wooden roof truss structure with vertical boarding is still intact. Various roof dormers with recessed angled hipped roof have been installed in the roof of the front building. The roof dormers have a small rectangular wooden window, wooden cleats and zinc roof covering.
The property is constructed in red brick above a mortared, cemented plinth. Details, such as band courses, drip mouldings, window arch springer and key stones of the window arches, consoles of the gutter line and the door architrave of the main entrance, are executed in stucco. Drip mouldings and stair treads are of hardstone. Unless otherwise stated, the window bays on the ground floor contain a rectangular wooden T-window with semicircular fanlight and three-pane glazing bars. On the first floor the window bays contain, unless otherwise stated, a rectangular wooden T-window with three-pane fanlight and coved stretch, whereby the filling piece between coved stretch and fanlight is filled with decorative brickwork.
The front gable (W) has a width of seven window bays. Horizontal articulation takes place through the band courses, drip mouldings and a profiled gutter line on consoles. In the vertical articulation the emphasis lies on the middle window bay which forms a central risalit over two storeys. The central risalit has on the ground floor the entrance, consisting of three stair treads, a double panelled door with iron decorative grilles and fanlight, and a stuccoed door architrave with pilasters, cornice and pediment. The year "1896" is inscribed in the pediment. On the first floor the central risalit has a large rectangular casement window with two-pane fanlight and coved stretch. The central risalit is crowned by a top gable with eclectic details in stucco. In the top gable is a rectangular casement window with coved stretch. On either side of the central risalit are gable sections with a width of three window bays, which are finished by a cornice in decorative brickwork and profiled gutter line on consoles. The band courses in the front gable continue over the side gables.
The left side gable (N) has on the ground floor one window bay (entirely eastern) with a rectangular T-window with coved stretch and on the first floor (entirely eastern) two small windows with coved stretch.
The right side gable (S) has on the ground floor one semicircular window and one rectangular window with coved stretch. The first floor has one rectangular window with coved stretch and (entirely eastern) two small windows with coved stretch.
On the rear gable (O) is the rectangular extension under recessed hipped roof.
Valuation
The orphanage is of general importance from a cultural and architectural-historical point of view as a historically-functional main component of the orphanage complex "Huize van Strijen". Furthermore, the object is of importance as a well-preserved example of an orphanage built at the end of the 19th century in an eclectic style of construction.
