Inleiding

Introduction

MAGAZINE, now dwelling, designed by architect G.B. Broekema in the Neo-Renaissance architectural style and built in the period 1896-1898. The magazine was originally part of the complex around the Stoomconfectiefabriek of the firm H.G.J. Luken.

The freestanding building stands at the corner of the Molenweg and the second Weidjesstraat. In front of the front facade on the Molenweg (S) stand two small gates on a built-up ridge with ashlar blocks.

Due to the change of function, the interior of the magazine has been substantially altered.

Description

The magazine is constructed over one storey on an L-shaped ground plan under a truncated hipped roof with anthracite-grey curved tiles and a projecting gutter line on brackets. The facades are above a plastered base executed in red brick with plastered ornamental bands, keystones and other decorative stones with diamond-shaped heads. Furthermore ashlar stones and decorations in sandstone and hard stone.

The front facade (S) has three window axes. The middle window axis is drawn higher under a gabled roof. Centrally on the ground floor a double panel door, flanked by two T-windows. Both the fanlight of the door and the windows are located under a round arch. The fanlights are provided with a trefoil filled with leaded glass. Between the round arches small round arches on the brickwork. The top above the entrance is provided with a cross window and short pilasters on consoles, on which sandstone pylons with scrollwork, blocks, Ionic capitals and balls. At the bottom and top of the pylons hard stone strips. On either side of the top small wooden roof dormers under gabled roofs with a projecting half-hipped end and a maklar.

The left side facade (W) is blank, in the right side facade (E) straight-headed windows are placed.

Against the rear facade (N) an extension with two windows and fanlights.

Valuation

The magazine, now residential house, is of general architectural historical significance because of:

- the Neo-Renaissance architectural style

- the integrity of the front facade
