Omschrijving

Description
THE HIGH RAILWAY BRIDGE, constructed in 1883 to the design of the then Ministry of Waterways, Trade and Industry, on the orders of the State Railways. Construction of the iron superstructure: firm H. Dalhuisen at Kampen.
Bridge over the Zwolle station complex, at the height of Van Karnebeekstraat and Schellerstraat, consisting of three iron lattice girder spans with parabolic, fish-belly or lens construction of approximately 36 metres each, which rest on iron yokes placed between the rails; the main girders of the span, which on both sides is enclosed with an iron fence, are supported on cast-iron bearing seats (roller bearing) and originally rested on ashlar plinths (these have since been replaced for technical reasons - electrification - by steel supports on concrete), which in turn rest on abutments constructed of dark brick with ashlar corner blocks and moulded drip mouldings.
The approach ramps to the bridge are horseshoe-shaped, paved with Dutch brick and partly still enclosed with a cast-iron fence with balusters and fence in ashlar with various coping (octagonal and round), which replaces the original ashlar bollards with iron tie rods; in the approaches there are now on each side two (originally three) flights of stairs with ashlar steps; some still with wrought-iron handrail.
Late 19th-century (1883) railway bridge, of importance from the point of view of the history of the application of iron construction (technical, architectural and functional) - in particular that of the nationally and internationally rare fish-belly or lens construction - and of importance from the point of view of the technical historiography of the Dutch Railways and because of its location in a historically urban planning sense.
