Omschrijving complexonderdeel 2

Description of complex component 2

The boundary of the protected PARK AARDENBURG in late landscape style runs along the Driebergsestraatweg in the north until the Pittesteeg (west), then following the Pittesteeg in a southern direction until the Molenweg, then following the Molenweg in an eastern direction until the unused rear entrance. From here the boundary follows the cadastral plot boundary along an unmade road in a northern direction until the drive which runs in an eastern direction. The boundary crosses this road and runs behind the buildings which stand here on the north side of the drive and then bends in a northern direction, following the plot boundary, until the Driebergsestraatweg. The first park layout by J. Copijn is composed around the country house Aardenburg and consists of a rectangular, slightly undulating meadow which lies between the Driebergsestraatweg and the country house. The meadow is planted with solitary trees and tree groups (mainly oaks and beeches) which reinforce the depth effect, while the enclosure of the meadow is achieved by high tree planting at the edges. From the Driebergsestraatweg there are a number of views with sight lines towards the country house. From the house a sight line runs in a north-eastern direction and a sight line in an eastern direction.

In the west the meadow is bounded by the drive. This drive also functions as a dividing line between the eastern part of the park with the meadow and the country house, and the western part which was laid out by H. Copijn in 1902. The binding element between the meadow and the extension by H. Copijn is the pond which in the north-western part of the meadow begins as a bowl-shaped pond and continues as a serpentine pond under the drive towards the south-west. The pond runs largely through mixed parkland forest. The terrain here is undulating and is closed off by two high hills in the south. The pond widens halfway and is here provided with a small island which is planted with trees and shrubs. After the widening the pond narrows and runs between two high hills. At the foot of the hills imitation rock formations are installed. Both hills are connected to each other by means of a high bridge across the pond. Because of its height, the bridge offers a fine view over the pond. The bridge is not original. South of the aforementioned hills, the pond functions as a boundary between the parkland forest on the west side and a rectangular meadow on the east side. The pond ends finally in the extreme south-western corner of the terrain.

Significance

The landscape park of the former country estate Aardenburg is of (garden) architectural historical value as a well-preserved example of a park in late landscape style and as part of the oeuvre of J. Copijn and H. Copijn. Also of ensemble value in relation to the country house.
