Omschrijving complexonderdeel 1

Description of complex component 1

Detached COUNTRY HOUSE from 1861 designed by L.H. Eberson and in 1902 altered and extended by C.B. Posthumus Meyjes. The house has an almost rectangular floor plan. The house is partially cellared and has two storeys under a hipped roof covered with Spanish tiles, composed and flattened, in which a number of roof dormers with pediment tops are set. The 1902 extension on the south and east sides is executed in the style of the existing country house. All white plastered facades are provided with a hard stone plinth. The facades are embellished with profiled band mouldings between the first and second storey and are accentuated at the corners with pilasters which in the first storey are provided with horizontal joints. In the second storey the pilasters have a case filling with medallion. The part of the right facade (west side), which dates from before the extension, has two coupled pilasters at the corners. The facades are terminated by means of a wooden cornice with casements and medallions. A projecting gutter is supported by wooden corbels. The windows are mainly six-pane sash windows and are provided with blinds.

The north facade has a width of five window bays, of which the leftmost bay in the second storey is slightly recessed. In front of this is a balcony with iron railings.

The south facade is four window bays wide, with the former service entrance in the second bay from the left. To the right the facade recedes. In the inner corner a wall is set which supports a pergola. To the right of this, at the corner with the rear facade, there is a four-sided veranda which is constructed from open-worked wooden corner posts, between which an open-worked lintel is set at the top. The roof of the veranda is closed with glass panels.

The west or right facade is six window bays wide. On the left the facade has a projection of three window bays. This projection forms the oldest part and has in the middle bay an entrance arrangement under a wrought-iron canopy which connects to the balcony placed above it. The building volume set further back of three window bays width concerns the extension by Posthumus Meyjes from 1902.

The east or left facade has on the right side a four-sided outbuilding of two storeys under a hipped roof. Immediately to the right of this outbuilding is a five-sided wraparound wooden veranda with wooden railings under a zinc canopy. As for detailing and construction, the veranda almost corresponds with the other veranda. However, the roof has been given a zinc covering.

The layout of the house is still largely original. The interior has been adapted and renewed with the 1902 alteration and extension. The main entrance in the west facade is located in the old part of the house. The vestibule, to which two small rooms are adjoined, borders to the east on an L-shaped central hall, which takes up almost a quarter of the total area of the old house. To this hall are adjoined the salon, large room and reception room. A door to the right leads to a long corridor, to which various functional spaces are adjoined, including a subsequently greatly enlarged kitchen and a service staircase. The central hall has a mosaic floor in fan motif, in which stylized flowers are incorporated. The floor is surrounded by a meander border and a border with stylized flower motifs. The hall has wooden wainscoting and a richly detailed wooden staircase with baluster railings. The stairwell is covered with a monumental glass lantern of leaded glass. In the various rooms on the ground floor, and to a lesser extent on the upper floor, there are original neoclassical fireplaces from 1862 executed in marble or wood. In the south-eastern room, adjoining the hall on the ground floor, there is a fireplace from 1902 in Art Nouveau style. The fireplace has a richly ornamented tile tableau with birds, flowers and leaves. The large room on the east side has wooden wainscoting and a coffered ceiling with richly worked corbels. Various rooms are also provided with panel wainscoting and fabric wallpaper. The aforementioned elements fall under national monument protection.

Significance

The country house Aardenburg is of architectural historical value as an example of a building type and because of the well-preserved interior elements. As well as of cultural historical value because of its origins and history of habitation. Also of great ensemble value as part of the complex in relation to the surrounding park.
