Omschrijving onderdeel 2: HISTORISCHE TUIN- EN PARKAANLEG.
Inleiding
De rechte Groen van Prinstererlaan en de Lindelaan zijn de restanten van een achttiende-eeuwse formele aanleg. De landschappelijke parkaanleg voor het kasteel kwam in de periode 1876 en 1879 tot stand naar een ontwerp van de Duitse tuinarchitect C.E.A. Petzold. Hij transformeerde het bestaande vroeg-landschappelijke water- en padenpatroon tot het huidige landschapspark. De parkaanleg van Petzold kenmerkt zich door een ruimtelijke opbouw met sterke perspectiefwerking, waardoor het terrein groter lijkt dan het in werkelijkheid is.
Omschrijving
Het landschapspark met grote waterpartij, weide en slingerende wandelpad langs de lobbenvormige bosrand strekt zich uit aan de voorzijde van het kasteel. Door de situering en de oriëntatie van de hoofdfaçade aan de vijverpartij speelt het kasteel een belangrijke rol in de compositie van de parkaanleg. Het schilderachtige silhouet dat in de vijverpartij gespiegeld wordt en het gevarieerde en kleurrijke materiaalgebruik van de gevels zijn afgestemd op de landschappelijke aanleg. Door de bijzondere compositie van de onderdelen en de samenstelling van kleuren in de beplanting zijn in het park zichtassen met sterke perspectiefwerking gecreëerd. De open weides van de brede zichtas richting Laan van Hoogwolde en de smallere zichtas richting Rust en Vreugd zijn enigszins geaccidenteerd en worden omzoomd door de lobbenvormige bosranden. Vanaf de Oud Wassenaarseweg volgt de oprijlaan (de Kasteellaan) de curve van de waterpartij voor het kasteel langs en buigt af naar de Lindelaan. Langs de kasteellaan en op de oever van de waterpartij enkele boomgroepen (o.a. beuken, rode beuken, kastanjes en eiken) afgewisseld met heesterpartijen. Voor het kasteel verbreedt de waterpartij zich tot een grote vijver en vormt vervolgens een smalle verbinding met de Zijlwetering. Aan weerszijden van de hoofdfaçade van het kasteel, aan de oevers van de waterpartij, boomgroepen en heesters als coulissen. Op strategische punten in het open weiland enkele kleine boomgroepen en solitairen (eiken en kastanjes). Langs een gedeelte van de lobbenvormige bosrand slingert een wandelpad met gezichten op het kasteel. In het bos nog enkele, deels door bomen geflankeerde, slingerpaden en een deel van het assortiment aan beplanting uit de tijd van de aanleg; overwegend eiken met enkele beuken en kastanjes, afgewisseld met taxus. In het bosgedeelte langs de oevers van de Zijlwetering een concentratie van rode beuken, hulst en esdoorn.
Waardering
De HISTORISCHE TUIN- EN PARKAANLEG van de buitenplaats Oud Wassenaar is van algemeen cultuur- en tuinhistorisch belang als representatief en gaaf voorbeeld van een laat negentiende-eeuwse landschappelijke aanleg, ontworpen door de Duitse tuinarchitect C.E.A. Petzold. Kenmerkend voor het oeuvre van Petzold is de ruimtelijke opbouw met de sterke perspectiefwerking in de compositie van de onderdelen, het bijzondere kleurgebruik van de lobbenvormig aangelegde beplanting en de sterke visuele relatie tussen de parkaanleg en het kasteel.
