- als hoofdonderdeel en representatief voorbeeld van een landhuis met bijgebouwen naar analogie van historische buitenplaatsen, kenmerkend voor de eerste fase in de ontwikkeling van Wassenaar tot villadorp;

Introduction to complex component 1

COUNTRY HOUSE Frisiastate built in New Historicist style with influence from the Neo-Dutch Renaissance and English Country House style. At the behest of E.P. de Monchy from Rotterdam, the country house was completed in 1910 according to a design by architects Z. Hoek and J.T. Wouters.

Description

Underpinned building of two storeys and an attic storey under a high mansard roof with slate in Maas bond. The building has a rectangular floor plan with high projecting risalits on all facades under broken hipped roofs. On the north facade a single-storey wing under mansard roof. The facades are, above a high plinth of brown brick, constructed in red brick in cross bond with grey sandstone decorative bands and blocks. Sandstone frieze under the overhanging guttering. Sculptured sandstone ornaments with family coats of arms at the corners and in the gable tops with stylised decorations. Tile tableaux and loose tiles with plants and animal figures (rooster, cat etc.) in relief at various places in the facades. Several windows under natural stone lintels and large composite window arrangements in robust window surrounds of blocks of grey natural stone. In a number of the windows leaded lights and glazing bars in the fanlights. Wooden shutters with hourglass motif for the lower windows. Above several windows round and segmental arches with natural stone ornamental blocks.

Centrally in the symmetrical front facade (west) an entrance arrangement in a projecting portico with balcony between two high risalits. A brick BorderStap of five steps with natural stone treads leads to the wooden door with moulding under semicircular four-part fanlight. The round arch of the portico rests on rectangular tapered fluted natural stone columns, the walls are decorated with speckled masonry. On either side of the stairs are brick wing pieces with natural stone blocks and treads, which conceal the adjoining cellar entrances from view. The portico is flanked by windows with semicircular fanlights. Above the portico a balcony with natural stone parapet into which relief tiles are incorporated. The double glazed door with fanlight is set in a frame of natural stone blocks, as are the flanking windows. In the front facade of the left risalit three-part window arrangements and in the side facade narrow single windows. Right risalit with small single windows in front and side facades. To the right of the right risalit the high plinth is carried through as the parapet of the adjoining BorderStap at the corner with the south facade.

In the central risalit of the south facade the double glazed door and the windows on the first floor are set in a sandstone frame. The doors give access to a raised terrace with brick parapet and stairs to the garden. Against the north facade a single-storey extension and large brick chimney. In front of the central risalit of the symmetrical rear facade (east) a large conservatory with sandstone fluted tapered columns, originally an open veranda. The parapet of the balcony above the conservatory is executed with sculptured natural stone blocks and relief tiles. On either side of the risalit large four-part window arrangements and double glazed door of the balcony with upper and side lights in natural stone frame. Round about in the roof roof dormers under single-pitch roofs.

In the INTERIOR, which in floor plan and detailing, particularly on the first floor, has remained well preserved, the combination of the English Country House style and the Neo-Dutch Renaissance is also evident. In the hall, the staircase and several rooms on the ground floor particularly richly executed compartmented stucco ceilings with mouldings and geometric patterns in Renaissance style. Draught porch with marble floor and wall panelling under plastered barrel vault. The adjoining vestibule is entirely clad in marble and contains a double washbasin under barrel vaults. Across the width of the house a hallway with parquet flooring, oak panelled wall panelling and doors. On the north side of the hall a monumental staircase with balusters in the form of stylised columns with scroll capitals. Opposite the entrance in the hall a fireplace arrangement with Delft blue tiles and oak wooden mantelpiece and panel panelling in which a landscape painting is incorporated. Second fireplace arrangement at the stairs with natural stone chimney in Tudor style and oak wooden mantelpiece with pilasters executed in carving and frieze with shell motif and consoles. In the hall hangs a tile tableau from 1919 (Westraven Tile Factory, Utrecht) commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Provincial Protestant Orphanage in Middelharnis. Garden room with monumental chimney in Neo-Louis style with marble mantelpiece, mirror and above it a painting. Green painted panelling with gilded ornament friezes. The ceiling in the conservatory (originally open veranda) with ornaments in Neo-Louis style. (Formerly) dining room with panelled wall panelling and 'inglenook' with tall wooden chimney, flanked by leaded light windows.

Valuation

The country house Frisiastate dating from 1910 is of general importance because of its cultural and architectural-historical value

- as principal component and representative example of a country house with outbuildings by analogy with historical country estates, characteristic of the first phase in the development of Wassenaar as a villa village;

- because of the New Historicist building style with influence from the English country house style and the Neo-Dutch Renaissance, a representative example of the architectural oeuvre of architects Hoek and Wouters.

The country house is in a high degree of integrity in principal form, use of materials and detailing, both externally and internally.

The country house has high ensemble value because of the spatial, functional and stylistic coherence with the other complex components.
