Inleiding

Waardering

Bijschuur van belang vanwege:

- de voor Twickel karakteristieke typologie en vormgeving

- de ruimtelijk-functionele samenhang met de boerderij

Introduction

FARMSTEAD COMPLEX, Erve Voortman, from 1859 which belongs to the estate Twickel.

The complex consists of a small FARMHOUSE OF THE HALL-HOUSE TYPE and a detached BARN with an attached bakehouse. The remaining partly substantially altered and partly new barns and outbuildings on the farmyard are of subordinate importance for the purposes of protection, but are nonetheless determining for the enclosure of the farmyard. A large part of the tenant farms on the estate Twickel are of this standard type which is based on the traditional Twente hall-house, but which differs from it by the application of half-hipped ends instead of wooden gable tops. This is the result of the instruction which Unico Willem van Wassenaer, the then lord of Twickel, established in 1760 with regard to farmbuilding on the estate. According to this instruction, the farmhouses and barns were henceforth to be provided with half-hipped ends instead of wooden gable tops when rebuilt or newly constructed. Because Weldam (Goor) belonged to Twickel from 1751 to 1877, the same instruction applied during that period to farmbuilding on that estate.

The farmhouse stands parallel to the Noordmolen with its front facade facing east. The barn stands to the west of the farmhouse at the entrance to the farmyard from the public road. On the east and south sides of the farmhouse an ornamental garden enclosed by a low hedge with several fruit trees. In front of the back facade (west) of the farmhouse stands a solitary chestnut tree in the middle of the farmyard.

The barn screens the farmyard from the meadow lying to the northwest. The enclosure of the farmyard is reinforced by the series of barns and other outbuildings which bound the farmyard on the north side.

Description

The BARN is constructed in reddish-brown brick under a half-hipped gabled roof covered with red Dutch tiles. The strongly projecting half-hipped ends are boarded underneath. The bakehouse on the northeast side has a gabled roof covered with Dutch tiles. In the end facades (north and south) of the barn are large cart entrances and in the side facades (east and west) stable doors and (renewed) stable windows.

Valuation

Secondary barn of importance because of:

- the typography and design characteristic of Twickel

- the spatial-functional relationship with the farmhouse
