Inleiding
Dubbele SLUISWACHTERSWONING in traditioneel-ambachtelijke stijl, ca. 1850. Gebouwd bij sluis 19 van de Zuid-Willemsvaart, tegen het talud van de Bosscherweg. De sluiswachterswoning vormt samen met de sluis, het jaagpad, de waterduiker en de naburige brugwachterswoning een onverbrekelijk functioneel geheel.
Omschrijving
Vrijstaande dubbele sluiswachterswoning met souterrain, twee bouwlagen en zolderverdieping op rechthoekige plattegrond, gebouwd tegen het talud van de Bosscherweg. Aan de Bosscherweg zijn slechts de tweede bouwlaag en de zolderverdieping zichtbaar. Het geheel wordt gedekt door een plat dak met bakgoten en dakschilden, waarop de leien in schubdekking zijn vervangen door bitumen. Overstekken op consoles. Zoldervenster op het voorste dakschild.
De symmetrisch ingedeelde voorgevel van nr. 34a aan de Bosscherweg met gecementeerde plint heeft een centraal geplaatste, rechthoekige, dubbele houten paneeldeur. Aan weerszijden recente, rechthoekige houten vensters met bovenlicht. Boven de deur een vlaggemasthouder.
Aan beide zijgevels een trap met balustrade, die toegang geeft tot het bordes van pand 34b. De linkerzijgevel telt twee vensterassen met rechthoekige houten vensters van recente datum. Tussen deze twee assen is het middelste zoldervenster gedicht en zijn er twee kleine rechthoekige houten vensters aangebracht. De rechterzijgevel telt een drietal vensterassen, waarin twee vensters van de middenas zijn dichtgemetseld. De achtergevel, waarin de entree van pand nr. 23b, telt drie vensterassen en is symmetrisch ingedeeld. De voordeur is geheel vernieuwd.
Het souterrain van pand 34b risaleert, heeft hardstenen hoeklijsten plus een hardstenen bordesafdekking, een originele smeedijzeren balustrade met rozetten en is aan weerszijden bereikbaar via een trap met hardstenen traptreden. De souterraingevel is symmetrisch en voorzien van een centraal geplaatste dubbele segmentboogvormige houten deur met origineel hang- en sluitwerk en vensterrooster. Hardstenen lijst met imitatievoegen in drukboog. Aan weerszijden twee rechthoekige dubbele houten souterraindeuren van recente datum onder een rollaag cq. latei.
De dubbele sluiswachterswoning is opgetrokken in veldbrandsteen, gemetseld in kruisverband, voorzien van gecementeerde plinten en heeft hardstenen dorpels en lateien waarin de bevestigingspunten van de verwijderde luiken nog te zien zijn.
De indeling van het INTERIEUR is volledig gewijzigd. Het pand had oorspronkelijk een verticaal gescheiden indeling. Thans bestaat het sluiswachtershuis uit een beneden- en bovenwoning zonder beschermenswaardige interieuronderdelen.
Waardering
De dubbele sluiswachterswoning is van cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een sociaal-economische en typologische ontwikkeling. De architectuurhistorische waarden worden bepaald door de esthetische kwaliteiten van de woning. Het pand is een essentiëel onderdeel van het sluiscomplex aan de Bosscherweg, vanwege de situering verbonden met de negentiende eeuwse ontwikkeling van de stad, van bijzondere betekenis voor het aanzien van Maastricht en heeft een historisch-ruimtelijke relatie met de Zuid-Willemsvaart. De architectonische gaafheid van de sluiswachterswoningen is aangetast, maar het pand is van belang in relatie tot de visuele gaafheid van de directe omgeving. Double LOCK KEEPER'S HOUSE in traditional-artisanal style, circa 1850. Built at lock 19 of the Zuid-Willemsvaart, against the slope of the Bosscherweg. The lock keeper's house, together with the lock, the towpath, the water culvert and the neighbouring bridge keeper's house, forms an inseparable functional whole.
Description
Detached double lock keeper's house with basement, two storeys and attic storey on rectangular floor plan, built against the slope of the Bosscherweg. At the Bosscherweg only the second storey and the attic storey are visible. The whole is covered by a flat roof with gutters and roof slopes, on which the slates in overlapping pattern have been replaced by bitumen. Overhanging eaves on consoles. Attic window on the front roof slope.
The symmetrically arranged front facade of no. 34a at the Bosscherweg with cemented plinth has a centrally placed, rectangular, double wooden panelled door. On either side recent, rectangular wooden windows with fanlight. Above the door a flagpole bracket.
On both side facades a staircase with balustrade, which gives access to the landing of building 34b. The left side facade has two window axes with rectangular wooden windows of recent date. Between these two axes the middle attic window is blocked up and two small rectangular wooden windows are installed. The right side facade has three window axes, in which two windows of the middle axis are bricked up. The rear facade, in which the entrance of building no. 23b, has three window axes and is symmetrically arranged. The front door is completely renewed.
The basement of building 34b projects, has ashlar corner mouldings plus an ashlar landing capping, an original wrought-iron balustrade with rosettes and is accessible on both sides via a staircase with ashlar steps. The basement facade is symmetrical and provided with a centrally placed double segmental-arch wooden door with original hinges and closing mechanism and window grille. Ashlar moulding with imitation joints in relieved arch. On either side two rectangular double wooden basement doors of recent date under a roller or lintel.
The double lock keeper's house is constructed in field-burnt brick, laid in English bond, provided with cemented plinths and has ashlar sills and lintels in which the attachment points of the removed shutters are still visible.
The INTERIOR layout has been completely altered. The building originally had a vertically divided arrangement. It now consists of a lock keeper's house comprising a ground-floor and upper-floor dwelling without interior components worthy of protection.
