Inleiding

Rechthoekige stalen vensters. Deels geblindeerde keperboogvormige vensterkozijnen in de kruisarmen. Rechthoekige galmgaten.

Torenent.

Introduction

ST. HUBERTUS CHURCH, three-aisled with tower, beneath which a basement storey arranged as a patronage. Situated in the Boschpoort district, located between the Meuse, Feeding Canal and South Willemsvaart. Built in expressionist style, commissioned by building pastor A. Lenders, to a design by architect Jules Kayser, 1924-25. The roof and tower of the church were restored in 1975 and 1977 respectively.

Description

Three-aisled church on a cruciform ground plan with tower and undercroft, characterized by an expressive, vertically accentuated architecture.

This vertical accentuation is achieved with a slender, stepwise tapering tower with hipped roof beside the entrance portal, narrow high-rising windows, stepwise tapering buttresses, a tall church nave beneath a steep gabled roof with slate in Meuse covering, high-rising chimneys and a tall apse built up from five narrow, stepwise tapering building volumes. Side aisles beneath leanto roofs with slate in Meuse covering. Horizontal elements form the plinth, sill and facade list in concrete. The front elevation of the church emanates a strong diagonal effect due to the sightline between the hipped roof of the low side chapel, the steep roof slope and the hipped roof of the tower. Between tower and side chapel a squat, threefold entrance bay with step treads is placed. Expressiveness in the masonry through the application of Flemish bond, vertical brick course lines on the facade corners, profiled courses, toothed block decorations, stepped diagonal arch lists, ornamental masonry in block bond in the plinths and the front portal.

Rectangular, partly double, wooden entrance doors with decorative fittings. Tall, narrow steel pointed-arch windows with leaded glass.

Rectangular, horizontally articulated steel three-pane windows with leaded glass, placed in the projecting frames of the side aisles.

Pointed-arch wooden frames with multiple cross glazing.

Rectangular steel windows. Partly shielded diagonal-arch window frames in the transept arms. Rectangular acoustic openings.

To the right beside the entrance bay is a Sacred Heart image by Charles Vos, originating from the "De Maas" Steel Works. The church is partly surrounded by a low brick boundary wall with saddle back.

Bell turret with bell tower consisting of a bell by an unknown founder, 1925, diam. 48 cm and a modern bell.

In the INTERIOR influenced by Art Deco, various parts of the reinforced concrete structure and much expressive visible masonry in red and/or yellow brick are evident. In the nave are pointed wooden vaults on pointed-arch brick ribs with tension rods. Pointed wooden vaults in the transepts, flat wooden vaults in the side aisles. The gallery with organ rests on richly ornamented corbels.

The church has a black-grey checkered hard stone floor, floors of two types of yellow Belgian marble in the presbytery choir and side chapels, a black marble altar and stylized granite columns. Also of importance are: four confessionals specially designed for the Hubertus Church, church furnishings on platforms, communion rail and marble pulpit, 1941, as a gift from the contractors' association. Organ, one manual, Fa. Pereboom in Maastricht, 1941. Organ and organ case are not of value from the perspective of monument conservation. Ceramic reliefs by Charles Eyck and Frans Timmermans depicting scenes from the life of St. Hubertus, the transfer of the relics of St. Lambertus by St. Hubertus to the new episcopal seat Liège, the Creation narrative and the Resurrection. Frescoes by Charles Eyck. Wall paintings in the presbytery choir by Eugène Laudy, depicting the professions of the inhabitants of the Boschpoort district and images of the surrounding industries, 1946.

Tile tableaux on communion rails and various wall paintings by H. Schoonbrood; Way of the Cross in oil on wood and crucifix in sacristy by Hub. Levigne; leaded glass by Frans Slijpen, Eugène Laudy and D.D.W. Torenent.
