Inleiding
KATHOLIEKE SCHOOL in zakelijk expressionistische stijl, 1929, naar een ontwerp van architect A.H.J. Swinkels in opdracht van het schoolbestuur van de Sint Lambertusparochie. De school is vrijstaand gesitueerd aan de Volksbondweg.
Omschrijving
De school heeft een in de lengterichting geplaatste T-vormige plattegrond, telt twee bouwlagen en wordt afgedekt met schilddaken met Hollandse pannen, en een gedeelte met een plat dak. In de achtergevel vier dakkapellen van recentere datum. Rondboogvormige houten deur deels van recentere datum. Rechthoekige stalen vensters, deels met negenruitsverdeling. Het toegepaste bouwmateriaal is gele en rode baksteen in kettingverband. Kunststeen.
De voormalige school bestaat uit twee delen. Een hoofdvleugel en een hogere, dwars daarop staande vleugel. In deze laatste vleugel bevindt zich de ingangspartij. De vleugel met ingangspartij met entree in een rondboogvormige metselwerk omlijsting. Entree in een licht vooruitspringend geveldeel met diverse horizontale accenten in hardsteen. In de tweede bouwlaag vier smalle gekoppelde stalen vensters met aan weerszijden een klein stalen venstertje. Onder de dakrand een reeks van acht kleine stalen venstertjes. Vensters met doorlopende dorpelstenen en lateien in kunststeen. In linkerdeel rechterzijgevel in de eerste en tweede bouwlaag vier smalle gekoppelde stalen vensters, in de tweede bouwlaag met kunststenen latei. Middendeel rechter zijgevel licht vooruitspringend met in de tweede bouwlaag een groot dertig-ruits venster. Geprofileerd hoger doorlopende schoorsteen. In het rechterdeel van de rechter zijgevel twee grote stalen vensters.
De hoofdvleugel heeft horizontale accenten in de vorm van reeksen drie- en negenruits vensters. Vensters met doorlopende kunststenen lateien en schuin aflopende geglazuurde dorpelstenen. Het voorste deel van deze vleugel met plat dak.
In de achtergevel in de eerste en tweede bouwlaag grote klaslokaalvensters.
In het INTERIEUR zijn van belang het trappenhuis met granitovloer en traptreden; trapleuning deels in smeedijzer en met houten armlegger; trappenhuis met hoge smalle vensters.
Voor het overige is de interieurindeling redelijk intact.
Waardering
De voormalige school bezit cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een culturele en typologische ontwikkeling. Het pand bezit architectuurhistorische waarde wegens het belang voor de bovenregionale geschiedenis van de architectuur, als voorbeeld van het oeuvre van architect A.H.J. Swinkels, en wegens de bijzondere samenhang tussen exterieur en delen van het interieur. Ensemblewaarde ontleent het pand aan de situering binnen een nog bestaande stedenbouwkundige structuur en daardoor van betekenis voor het aanzien van dit deel van Maastricht. The school has a T-shaped plan oriented lengthwise, consists of two storeys and is covered with hipped roofs with Dutch tiles, and a section with a flat roof. In the rear facade four roof dormers of more recent date. Round-arched wooden door partly of more recent date. Rectangular steel windows, some with nine-pane glazing. The building materials used are yellow and red brick in stretcher bond. Artificial stone.
The former school consists of two parts. A main wing and a taller wing set transversely to it. The entrance section is located in this latter wing. In the INTERIOR the following are of importance: the stairwell with granite floor and steps; stair railing partly in wrought iron and with wooden handrail; stairwell with tall narrow windows.
