Inleiding
KATHOLIEKE SCHOOL voor lager onderwijs, 1927, genaamd St.Alphonsusschool. Gebouwd in zakelijk expressionistische stijl, naar een ontwerp van ir. Jules Kayser, in opdracht van het R.K. Kerkbestuur St.Hubertusparochie. De school is gesitueerd in de wijk Boschpoort, aan de noordzijde van St.Hubertuskerk en Verbindingskanaal, in lengterichting ten opzichte van de straatweg.
Omschrijving
De St.Alphonsusschool heeft twee bouwlagen op een L-vormige plattegrond, is gedeeltelijk onderkelderd en wordt gedekt door een tussen de kopgevels verzonden plat dak met grespannenrand en decoratieve hemelwatervergaarbakken. De school bevindt zich in lengterichting ten opzichte van de straatweg.
De school is opgetrokken in donkerbruine baksteen, gemetseld in kettingverband en voorzien van rode keramische dorpellijsten. Het geheel kenmerkt zich door een kubische vormgeving. Het linkerdeel van de voorgevel heeft een risalerende, in dakhoogte verspringende hoekpartij, waarvoor een uitbouw van een laag onder plat met spits uitstulpende erker. Hierin was de kamer van het schoolhoofd ondergebracht. Rechts van de erker drie vierkante ongelede houten trappenhuisvensters.
Centraal in de gevel een rechthoekige dubbele houten deur, verdiept in een portiek met bakstenen bordes, geplaatst onder een betonluifel. Deze luifel wordt aan de linkerzijde gesteund door een houten klos, waaronder een gevelsteen met de tekst "St.Alphonsusschool 1927". Aan de rechterzijde rust de luifel op een klein risaliet van een laag met horizontale bakstenen profiellijsten en een hoog onder de deurluifel ingezette reeks rechthoekige, ongelede houten vensters. In de tweede laag van de voorgevel van links naar rechts een reeks vierkante, ongelede houten trappenhuisvensters, gevolgd door een reeks smalle en hoogoplopende stalen gangvensters voorzien met achtruits roedeverdeling. In de rechterzijgevel bevindt zich aan de ganguiteinden respectievelijk één vensteras met een rechthoekig, ongeleed houten venster en een smal stalen achtruits venster. De linkerzijgevel is blind.
De achtergevel wordt geheel in beslag genomen door een zestal grote klaslokaalvensters, waartussen in de tweede as een gangvenster en de achteruitgang is geplaatst. De lokaalvensters zijn opgebouwd uit een reeks met vijf rechthoekige houten vensters in kunststenen traceringen, waarboven een tienruits stalen vensterkozijn. Het gangvenster in de tweede laag heeft twee rechthoekige houten vensters met kunstenen tracering en een vierruits stalen venster. Hieronder een rechthoekige, dubbele houten achterdeur met verticaal ingedeeld stalen bovenlicht, een trapsgewijs uitgemetselde deurlijst, een betonluifel en een bakstenen bordes.
De speelplaats aan de achterzijde wordt omgeven door een bakstenen muur, waartegen een fietsenstalling onder plat met houten kolommen.
De indeling van het INTERIEUR is intact. Hierin is voornamelijk het pal achter de voorgevel geplaatste trappenhuis met een gele tegellambrizering, in terrazzo uitgevoerde traptreden, een smeedijzeren balustrade en een geornamenteerde handlijst van belang.
Waardering
De St.Alphonsusschool is van cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een maatschappelijke en geestelijke ontwikkeling.
De architectuurhistorische waarden worden bepaald door de expressieve bouwstijl, de betrokkenheid van architect Jules Kayser, de esthetische kwaliteiten van zijn ontwerp, de materiaaltoepassing en de ornamentiek.

The St.Alphonsusschool has two storeys on an L-shaped plan, is partly undercellared and is covered by a flat roof suspended between the gable walls with corrugated metal edge and decorative rainwater collection boxes. The school is situated in longitudinal orientation with respect to the street.
The school is constructed in dark brown brick, laid in chain bond and provided with red ceramic sill mouldings. The whole is characterized by a cubic form. The left part of the front facade has a projecting corner section with roof-height offset, in front of which an extension of one storey under a flat roof with a sharply projecting bay window. In the right side facade at the corridor ends there are respectively one window bay with a rectangular, unglazed wooden window and a narrow steel rear-pane window. The left side facade is blank.
The rear facade is entirely occupied by a series of six large classroom windows, between which in the second bay a corridor window and the rear entrance is placed. The classroom windows are constructed from a series of five rectangular wooden windows in stone traceings, above which a ten-pane steel window frame. The corridor window on the second storey has two rectangular wooden windows with stone tracery and a four-pane steel window. Below this a rectangular, double wooden rear door with vertically divided steel fanlight, a stepped brick door moulding, a concrete canopy and a brick dais.
The playground on the rear side is surrounded by a brick wall, against which a bicycle shed under a flat roof with wooden columns.
