Inleiding
ELEKTRICITEITSCENTRALE, 1910. Gebouwd in opdracht van de N.V. Sphinx, in traditionele stijl. De centrale is gesitueerd aan het Bassin, op de locatie waar de Zuid-Willemsvaart uitkomt in de havenkom. Het pand was oorspronkelijk vrijstaand, maar wordt thans aan de noord- en westzijde omsloten door aanbouwen van later datum. In 1967 werden de vensters in de eerste laag van de zuidgevel geblindeerd, de vensters van de tweede laag vernieuwd. Twee vensters kregen een klapetrooster.
De aanbouwen aan de west- en noordzijde zijn uitgesloten van bescherming.
Omschrijving
Elektriciteitscentrale op een vrijwel rechthoekige plattegrond, die vanwege de vensterreeksen in de zuidgevel de indruk wekt drie bouwlagen te tellen. Het wit gepleisterde geheel wordt gedekt door een zadeldak met grijze muldenpannen, bakgoten op klossen en een ijzeren nokversiering.
De zuidgevel aan de Bassinzijde is vrijwel symmetrisch ingedeeld. Geprofileerde plint, zes door lisenen gescheiden vensterassen uitlopend in een geprofileerde kroonlijst. In de eerste bouwlaag een segmentboogvormige, dubbele stalen deur alsmede vijf geblindeerde segmentboogvormige vensterlijsten met een geprofileerde stuclijst. In de tweede bouwlaag zes zestienruits stalen vensters, waarvan twee met klapetrooster, in een segmentboogvormige lijst met vulstuk. Tussen het vulstuk en het venster een ijzeren latei met vijf rozetten, als het ware rustend op een console met gestucte diamantkop. De vensterlijst heeft een geprofileerde stucboog, in het vulstuk bevindt zich een heraldisch ornament. Hardstenen vensterdorpels.
In de derde laag per vensteras twee gekoppelde, rondboogvormige stalen twaalfruits vensters, met hardstenen aanzet- en dorpelstenen, alsmede gestucte segmentbogen.
De symmetrische oostgevel aan de Zuid-Willemsvaartzijde is door lisenen verdeeld in vier vensterassen en voorzien van een geprofileerde plint plus een trapsgewijs oplopend fries. In het fries een gevelsteen met de bouwjaaraanduiding 1910. In de twee buitenassen rechthoekige stalen twaalfruits vensters met een hardstenen latei, een dorpel in de vorm van een ijzeren latei met rozetten, een vulstuk met een stucornament waarboven een segmentboogvormige gestucte profiellijst. De hardstenen lateien rusten op twee sierlijke stucconsoles, de ijzeren lateien op gestucte diamantkopornamenten. In de middenassen twee identiek omlijste stalen 24-ruits vensters. Horizontale sierlijsten met zaagtandmotieven.
In het vrijgebleven deel van de westgevel is het getrapte fries nog zichtbaar. De centrale is inmiddels ontdaan van haar interieuronderdelen.
Waardering
De centrale is van cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een sociaal-economische en typologische ontwikkeling. De architectuurhistorische waarden worden bepaald door de bouwstijl, de esthetische kwaliteiten, materiaalgebruik en ornamentiek. De centrale is van zeer grote betekenis als essentieel onderdeel van de zeer waardevolle bebouwing rond het Bassin, is vanwege de situering van zeer groot belang voor het aanzien van de stedelijke omgeving en heeft een historisch-ruimtelijke relatie met de de voormalige binnenhaven. Het pand is in redelijke mate gaaf gebleven en draagt als zodanig bij tot de structurele en visuele gaafheid van de omgeving. Bovendien is de loods is in typologische en functioneel opzicht zeldzaam.

ELECTRICITY POWER STATION, 1910. Built on behalf of N.V. Sphinx, in traditional style. The station is situated at the Bassin, at the location where the Zuid-Willemsvaart meets the harbour basin. The building was originally detached, but is now enclosed on the north and west sides by later outbuildings. In 1967 the windows in the first storey of the south facade were blocked in, the windows of the second storey renewed. Two windows received a hinged grate.

Description
Electricity power station on an approximately rectangular floor plan, which, because of the window series in the south facade, gives the impression of having three storeys. The white plastered whole is covered by a gabled roof with grey pantiles, gutters on corbels and an iron roof ridge ornament.
The south facade on the Bassin side is arranged almost symmetrically. Profiled plinth, six window bays separated by pilasters ending in a profiled cornice. On the first storey a segmental arch-shaped, double steel door as well as five blocked segmental arch-shaped window surrounds with a profiled stucco surround. On the second storey six sixteen-pane steel windows, two of which with hinged grate, in a segmental arch-shaped surround with spandrel. Between the spandrel and the window an iron lintel with five rosettes, as it were resting on a console with stucco diamond-head ornament. The window surround has a profiled stucco arch, in the spandrel is a heraldic ornament. Hard stone window sills.

In the two outer bays rectangular steel twelve-pane windows with a hard stone lintel, a sill in the form of an iron lintel with rosettes, a spandrel with a stucco ornament above which a segmental arch-shaped stucco profile surround. The hard stone lintels rest on two elegant stucco consoles, the iron lintels on stucco diamond-head ornaments. In the middle bays two identically framed steel 24-pane windows. Horizontal decorative surrounds with sawtooth motifs.
In the remaining part of the west facade the stepped frieze is still visible. The power station has meanwhile been stripped of its interior components.
Valuation
The power station is of cultural-historical value as a particular expression of a socio-economic and typological development. The architectural-historical values are determined by the building style, the aesthetic qualities, use of materials and ornamentation. The power station is of very great significance as an essential part of the very valuable built development around the Bassin, is because of its location of very great importance for the appearance of the urban environment and has a historical-spatial relationship with the former inner harbour. The building has remained in reasonable condition and as such contributes to the structural and visual integrity of the surroundings. Moreover, the warehouse is rare in typological and functional terms.
